Nail your competition
Know your kit
OPI Educator Audrey Heffernen recommends the key pieces you should have in your kit...
By nature we’re creatures of habit, and it’s much easier for a client to enjoy all of her treatments at one salon, rather than having to book separate appointments at various salons and Spas in her area. But if you’re not offering a comprehensive range of nail treatments, then it’s likely your client will look elsewhere.
“I would highly recommend taking part in an acrylic or gel course,” says OPI Educator Audrey Heffernan. “They are a great trade to have under your belt. Nail enhancements are so popular nowdays, it is a must have.”
As Audrey states, experiencing training in a nail technique that’s new to you or that you’ve simply not practiced for some time will be a great bonus. As will being able to offer treatments from different brands; you should have a professional knowledge of every product you work with and have attended at least basic or conversion training so that you understand how the products work. Not all products behave the same and each may require a different technique, for example you should not assume that because you work with one brand of Gel that another will level the same or have the same curing point.
“Nail Training has come along way in the past few years,” says Audrey. “The nail industry has grown dramatically and has become very popular with all age groups. This has had a positive impact in the beauty industry and more positions being made available to become a nail technician.
“There is a wide variety of student nail kits available nowadays. There is everything from your basic manicure and pedicure kit to your more advanced, experienced acrylic and gel kits.”
Louisa Flanagan, from Nail & Beauty Systems, adds: “As we all know, in this day and age, everyone who is involved in training students is conscious of the price of the student kits along with the quality of the products.”
But as Ciara Flanagan of Plush Beauty states: “Your Training Kit is nearly as important as the training itself.”

Kitted out
Majority of nail courses, whether they be for manicure, pedicure, Acrylic or Gel enhancements will include a kit of some form, although some will require you to purchase this separately.
These are usually smaller versions of professional kits and should include everything you will need to get familiar with a treatment technique. Look for kits that include enough product to enable you to practice properly away from the classroom, on friends, family and willing clients as this is the only way you will become fully competent and confident. Don’t feel pressured into purchasing a full professional kit before you have qualified - your starter / training kit should be adequate until you begin offering the treatments in the salon when you can invest in the full range.
In your kit should not only include the products you will be require but also key equipment such as brushes, fi les, Dappen dishes and nail forms etc. A starter kit should be just that - a kit that features everything needed to get started.
