Beauty - Post-Summer Skin Care ............................................................................................................................................................................

“Sun exposure accelerates oxidation and inflammation in skin, while inflammation shows up as redness and broken veins. Both need attention and it is important to get the prescription right first time as clients will want to see improvements immediately, particularly with conditions such as enlarged pores, often the result of a long Summer of self-tans and lazy routines.”Viriginie Claire of Virginie Claire Products adds: “Generally, Celtic skin is delicate, prone to sensitivity and capillary damage and because of more frequent travel pigmentation is now a huge problem for all skin types, young to mature.”

Retail right

Add-on sales are vital to any salon or Spa business and this is a great opportunity to retail products that can help to restore, repair and revitalise the skin. Business expert Liz McKeon offers her retailing advise: “Research has shown that people are most susceptible to promotions/advertising at the entrance of a store - or the reception area of a salon. However, nine times out of 10, a client has not come to your salon to buy a product. The good news is that scientists have shown that, in general, most people have little or no shopping goals decided on when they enter into any store - consumer’s sensitivity to external cues is likely to be much higher in the earlier stages of their shopping.

“This means there is an opportunity for any salon owner to influence a client into buying a product well before they ever have their treatment. The key is to have a display unit that mirrors a shopping experience that clients are used to as well as aggressive promotion of products. Displays and merchandising have to catch the attention of clients as they walk through the door for their appointment.” Once you have helped your clients choose the right product to repair their skin, don’t forget to encourage them to purchase an SPF product from you too to wear through the Winter months. Just because it’s cloudy it doesn’t mean the sun can’t damage the skin! “For most typical Irish skins, continuing to protect the skin on the face and neck from UV damage is necessary even in our Autumn and Winter months,” says Virginie.
