Tony Stewart struggled most of the day and suffered a variety of problems — a pit-road penalty, a brush with the wall — but wound up leading late in the race. Though a fuel-mileage gamble didn’t work, a sixth-place fi nish helped him climb back into the top 10 in points. “We just had a long, long hard day,” Stewart said. “To get almost a top-fi ve out of this thing and run sixth was a good day for us.”

ALMOST THERE Smith’s Furniture Row team won at
Darlington and fi nished third at Indy. “Well, that is the most bittersweet third-place of all time because you can see the leaders,” he said. Photo: Elmer Kappell
KILLER AIR Kahne dominated the race early and
led the most laps, but a late-race spin killed his chances. “Out in clean air, we were defi nitely one of the best,” he said. Photo: Elmer Kappell
SUCKING SOUND After heartbreaking losses the past
two years, Montoya ran as high as third until pitting with 30 laps to go. “It sucks when you run good all day,” he said. Photo: Mark Hawkins
