FRIENDS & FAMILY
Martin Truex Sr. FATHER OF MARTIN TRUEX JR. AND RYAN TRUEX
> MY HOMETOWN: “I grew up in Mayetta, N.J. It’s just a little town. It’s a very modest place — blue-collar with small neighborhoods.”
> HIGH SCHOOL: “I left school when I was 16 years old to go into the fishing business. Two years later, I started my company, Sea Watch International. My brother and I started fishing and building boats on our own to start the company.”
> LOOKING BACK: “I’m very proud of what we’ve done. We are still very passionate about our business. I go to the dock every day. I am thoroughly involved in the business. I’m basically a man who grew up in a blue-collar town and built a company that employs over 600 people. I’m really proud of that and fortunate.”
> MY RACING CAREER: “My brother raced at a local track, Wall Stadium, and I decided to give it a try. I struggled like everybody. I got better as time went on. I didn’t take it seriously enough since it was more of a hobby. It was something to do on Saturday nights. I won the track championship at Wall in 1985 and all the big races there. As we got better, we decided to move it up a notch by going Busch North racing. While I was doing that, Martin was coming along in go-karts. When I saw that Martin had a lot of talent, I got serious. We basi- cally built a race team to run a limited Nationwide Series schedule for Martin. Then, Dale Earnhardt Jr. hired Martin, which I was thankful for, and that’s when I got out of racing. At that time, I had no idea Ryan would want to race.”
> MY SONS: “I’m very proud of them and what they have accomplished. I am especially proud of how they have carried themselves. They have basically done it on their own. It had nothing to do with me. Their mother raised them very well because when they were growing up, I spent most of my time building the company. I am so happy that they turned out to be good human beings. The racing is certainly a plus. They are both very level-headed. I’m just happy for them.”
> PETS: “I have a black Lab named Bristol. We got Ryan the puppy the week Martin won the Nationwide race and that’s how Bristol got her name.”
> FAVORITE MUSIC: “Country” > PLACE I’D LIKE TO VISIT: “Believe it or not, I’m very content with where I am.”
GETAWAY: “My house in Palm Beach, Fla.”
