INDUSTRY NEWS Technical symposium goes global
systems chaired by the BRE’s Roger Hitchin with speakers invited from the HVCA and FETA as well a leading quantity surveyor.
Diverse programme
Event chair Professor Tim Dwyer said the organisers were delighted with the breadth and depth of the papers offered and approved.
“There is definitely something for all CIBSE members in this diverse programme,” he said. “There is a growing appetite within the building services community for in-depth technical content and informed debate specific to our sector, which is not satisfied elsewhere. That is why there has been so much interest shown in this event already.”
The organising committee was eager to
keep the costs to delegates as low as possible so CIBSE has secured sponsorship from boiler and hot water equipment manufacturer Lochinvar. Managing Director David Pepper said he
More than 50 presentations have now been reviewed and approved for the first ever CIBSE Technical Symposium which will see technical experts from all over the world joining together at Leicester’s De Montfort University from 6-7 September. The event, which is aimed at building
services engineers engaged in the day-to- day detail of project design, academics and researchers, will hear from speakers based in the US, the Middle East and Europe. The rigorous peer review process involved
over 40 experts drawn from right across the industry representing the full scope of CIBSE members’ interests. They have agreed on a programme that will cover topics as diverse as low energy retrofits of historic homes, electrical power distribution, simulating future cooling demands, data centre performance, adapting existing buildings to meet climate change targets and reviewing DEC benchmarks. The event will also feature an open debate on embodied carbon in building services
was excited by the opportunity to support an event that was specifically focused on technical content and was clearly of great value to both young and experienced working engineers.
Focus on issues
“There are several excellent events aimed at senior executives that focus on management issues and business strategy,” said Mr Pepper. “But there is clearly demand for something with much more specific technical content and CIBSE needs to be commended for responding to that need.” CIBSE president Andy Ford will be opening the event and has put more integrated supply chain working and the needs of young engineers at the heart of his presidential year. “This will provide a wonderful chance for
young people to engage with the reality of the demands to create sustainable low energy buildings; to benefit from the experience of both practitioners and theorists; and to give them a springboard into a new industry,” he said.
Praise for Government’s apprenticeship scheme
Following the launch of a new government scheme, business owners across the UK will soon be able to take a leaf out of Lord Sugar’s book and ‘try before they buy’ to find their next apprentice, says training provider ATL.
The new Access to Apprenticeships scheme aims to provide help and support for young people aged 16-24 and give them the opportunity to demonstrate to employers their commitment to work and study to a required standard.
Achieve a standard
Under the scheme, employers can take on a prospective apprentice for up to 12 weeks unpaid work experience over the period of six months. If they achieve the required standard during this period, then each apprentice will complete the remainder of their training as a paid employee for £100
per week. Upon qualification a payment will then be made back to the employer. “It’s a great incentive for employers, as it’s really a win-win situation for them,” says Nick Hayward, CEO of leading vocational training provider, ATL. “An employer will be able to secure an extra pair of hands for a whole year for as little as £1500.” Nick added: “For employers who want an apprentice but who are uncertain about finding someone suitable for their business, it gives them a chance to try them out. And in the case of ATL apprentices, who complete an intensive training programme before coming on the job, the young person will be an asset to the company from day one.”
Access to Apprenticeships will provide up to 10,000 places in the first year, with a similar amount expected to be created in following years.

Geoff becomes President of FETA
Geoff Lockwood, Technical Director at ebm-papst, has been appointed President of the Federation of Environmental Trade Associations (FETA), which represents the interests of manufacturers, suppliers, installers and contractors within the heat pump, controls, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning industry. Lockwood is also President of the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning
Manufacturers Association (HEVAC), the organisation founded in 1944 by a group of fan manufacturers, which grew to incorporate other interest groups, resulting in the formation of HEVAC in 1968. He will continue with his responsibilities for HEVAC in his new role at FETA. Lockwood’s career spans over 21 years at ebm-papst, Europe’s largest motor and
fan manufacturer, which develops, designs and manufactures motor, fan and control solutions for the ICT, industrial engineering, refrigeration, heating and ventilation industries. He is a well-recognised figure within the industry, respected for his technical expertise, and has been instrumental in pioneering EC technology to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions from building service and refrigeration equipment. Cedric Sloan, Direct General of FETA, said: “Geoff has been effective in every role he has accepted within the federation and without doubt he will prove to be an excellent representative in this, the most senior position open to our trade association members.” Lockwood became active in the Fan Manufacturers Association (FMA), the specialist fan group within HEVAC, in 2000 and became the chairman in 2005, and has been a supportive and active member of industry groups and associations throughout his career. He said: “I am passionate about engineering and privileged to be working in such an innovative industry and to now be representing the interests of these valuable trade groups as their President.”
