PRODUCT FINDER Thinking Buildings Universe
Knowing where we can go to access particular information is something that can save us incalculable amounts of valuable time. The new Thinking Buildings Universe from Grundfos now offers building services professionals a centralised information point that is a one stop shop for commercial buildings services pump applications. This site has been specifically designed to work as an aide during planning and specification phases as well as when the selections have been made and the systems are operational. It has been developed with potential users around Europe who gave their input as to what they expected, needed and wanted to see from such an information hub. One particularly useful tool is the Lexicon function that
provides you with a glossary of pump industry terms. When you enter the website you will see the Lexicon option along the top bar which allows you to search for terms either by putting in a key word or by selecting from the A to Z option. With this facility and so much more why not save this site as
a ‘favourite’ so that your personal information centre will be available whenever you need it.

Don’t replace, e-place with Grundfos
Taking the opportunity to review the situation when there is a requirement to replace a pump is rarely taken, instead the pump is replaced with a ‘like for like’ pump which means the opportunity to gain efficiency, save energy and improve comfort levels is lost. When replacing a pump there are several points that should be considered as these will have an impact on whether you are making the best selection including: • Is the pump correctly sized for the current duty requirements?
• Has the building undergone any change of use since the pump was fitted?
• What solution would mean least pipe work modification? • How important is service access? But the most important question of all should be is there an
opportunity to replace with a variable speed option that will only work as hard as it needs to? This can save up to 80%+ of the energy required over a fixed speed counterpart. Grundfos Pumps has been the frontrunners in developing
variable speed technology and can provide you with a wide range of reliable pump solutions plus a wealth of experience.

Smith’s Environmental Products claims that its new Eco-Powerad, which combines the aesthetics of radiator design with the company’s renowned fan convector technology to deliver comparable outputs from a much smaller unit, could make serious in-roads into the UK radiator market. Available in four models, producing 0.5kW, 1kW, 1.5kW and 2kW at 50°C respectively, the Eco-Powerad looks and installs like a radiator but is actually a far more energy efficient product - a low cost fan convector that is simple to install and is designed to be installed as part of a renewable heating system. Jim Bennett, Sales and Marketing Director at Smith’s
Environmental Products commented: “The Eco-Powerad is an extremely energy efficient low surface temperature appliance, which uses only 5% of the water content of an equivalent radiator. This means that it can operate at system water temperatures as low as 40°C, enabling a renewable energy source, such as a heat pump, to operate more efficiently. The product also has a higher SAP rating (over 7.5% better) which allows house builders to reduce costs elsewhere.”
www.smiths-env.com The bare facts
Amongst a choice of high performance plate heat exchangers that extends to seven ranges and some 200 different units, Stokvis Energy Systems offers the option of bare plate models.
The latest Stokvis Econoplate Bare Plate Series is ideal for situations where the specifier wants to take advantage of the manufacturer’s reputation for build quality and performance, but is seeking to utilise minimum control and other ancillary equipment.
The units are supplied with just the basic chassis and the customer’s specification for the number and size of plates, as well as its type and even gasket material. Unlike the more sophisticated packaged ranges, there are no pumps, modulating valves or temperature sensors. The applications where bare plate options are preferred include refurbishment contracts where the M&E consultant wants to isolate modern boilers from old heating circuits, or industrial processes where very hot water or steam are being generated. Beyond this the bare plate heat exchangers can also be supplied to exchange energy between different fluids, and have been used in specialist applications such as for the production of geothermal energy.

JCC Lighting has launched Fireguard LED7, a fire-rated downlight for both residential and commercial applications that uses the latest energy efficient LEDs as a light source. The high light output and performance of the 7W LEDs are equivalent to a 50W halogen lamp, offering energy savings of over 80% against halogens. JCC has combined eight years of
experience in fire-rated lighting with state-of-the-art LED technology to deliver an energy efficient, high quality, fully-tested LED downlight. The LED output exceeds the 400 lumens and 45 lumens/circuit watt efficacy target required by Part L of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. The downlight contains six LED chips and its unique lens design gives a smooth, even spread of light with a 38 degree beam angle in line with halogen equivalents. JCC’s Fireguard range offers peace of mind over fire safety
issues. Most downlights have an open back and offer no seal or protection to the ceiling in the event of a fire. This means that the downlight’s cut-out hole has broken the fire-rating of the ceiling and heat and flames would be able to spread into upper floors.

Last year, Vent-Axia launched the innovative Centra extract fan, the first near silent dMEV (decentralised Mechanical Extract Ventilation) solution on the market. Now, the company has gone one better with an industry first, a new model which includes an integrated dynamic CO2 and humidity sensor, enabling Centra to automatically increase ventilation to meet demand. The unit’s energy saving Vent-Axia Lo-Carbon DC motors
improve its efficiency and carbon reducing capabilities, providing up to 80% energy savings on the motor over traditional AC driven fans alone. Vent-Axia’s Centra is a Lo-Carbon continuous running axial
fan offering constant trickle ventilation and comprising a boost feature which can be utilised as necessary based on specific room requirements. With the introduction of an integral CO2 sensor, the fan will slowly increase in speed between the pre- set trickle and boost speeds in proportion to the ambient CO2 parts per million (ppm) in the room. This will be set at installation at either above 700ppm or above 1000ppm. The fan also incorporates an intelligent dynamic humidity sensor which increases the speed slowly in proportion to the relative humidity between 70% and 90%RH.

Smedegaard has recently launched the SimFlex 'A' range of glandless circulators which enjoy all the advantages of variable speed control but, now also include permanent magnet technology thus making the motors even more efficient so saving even more energy. Better for the planet and better for your pocket. The SimFlex 'A' series of pumps are designed to run at a slower speed than many similar pumps in the market thus reducing noise levels and reducing maintenance. In addition, the speed of response of the Smedegaard pump to changes to the system is a further factor in the improvement of energy efficiency. A further money saving feature of the Smedegaard SimFlex
'A' range of pumps is the use of the TUT seal which limits the circulation of water around the motor rotor can and so limits the likelihood of the build-up of system deposits, this means less maintenance and a longer pump life. It does not end there! Alarm contacts, remote start/stop contacts and 0-10vdc signal are included in the entire range, add-on modules are not required to obtain these features.

www.dimplex.co.uk New range from Hager
Hager claims that its new sollysta decorative wiring accessories range is easier to fit and better protected against damage than competitive products. Installation features include a
shallow back projection, the UK’s first neutral loop terminal in wall switches, cable lead ins, captive terminal screws, backed out terminal screws, wire end stops, in line terminals and a three pin shutter mechanism on the sockets for safety. With aesthetics important, the wiring accessories are packed
to avoid damage and unsightly scratches during transit and installation. Each accessory is in its own recyclable fold flat cardboard cartoon and has a removable protective film cover that you can peel off after finishing the installation. Hager Product Manager Jane Yorke says: “Decorative wiring accessories are obviously chosen for their aesthetic appeal. It is therefore important to protect the accessories from any damage before and during installation. “We have also found that many decorative ranges are not the easiest to install and don’t have all of the features found in white moulded wiring accessories.
Our new range of sollysta
accessories has been designed with both the installer and the end user in mind.”
