Fläkt Woods has won an order to provide the ventilation requirements as part of a supply and installation package for the inspiring new National Indoor Sports Arena & Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome building, currently under construction which will be used for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The Velodrome is one element of the new
facility, which when completed will be one of the biggest indoor facilities of its type in Europe. The National Indoor Sports Arena & Sir Chris Hoy
Velodrome is being
constructed on a ten and a half acre site close to Celtic Park in the City's east end, which will also be close to the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village. Fläkt Woods is supplying a total of 25 air handling units from their EU range. The EU modular air handling unit gives total flexibility with its wide range of functions and options providing the optimum air handling solutions possible. A number of the units will be the largest
type available, EU84's, with high efficiency fans equipped with airflow measurement devices and a capacity of 25m³/s. The supply and exhaust units feature run-around coil recovery systems, heating, integrated local cooling and integrated local controls with connection to a BMS system
The development
The National Indoor Sports Arena & Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, which will house Scotland's first indoor cycling facility, is being built by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd and building work is due to be completed in summer 2012. The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome features a 250m banked timber track capable of housing 2,500 spectators with 2,000 seated. The central hub building will provide facilities over four floors including changing accommodation, main entrance concourse, ancillary sports and fitness accommodation and offices.

Back to school for MHS Boilers
MHS Boilers has supplied ten Ultramax 65kW wall-mounted condensing boilers and ten Xpressflo 300 litre condensing hot water generators to the University of Glamorgan, Pontypridd. As part of a £20 million redevelopment of the Treforest campus Halls of Residence, the boilers will be installed
in five plant rooms and provide heating and hot water to over 450 new en-suite rooms. The consulting engineers were The Hicks Titley Partnership from Bridgend. Commenting on the project, partner Mike Titley, said: “After close consultation with the MHS sales team, the Ultramax boilers and Xpressflo water heaters were clearly the best products for all five plant rooms. Not only did they easily meet the performance specification, their reliability and compact design made them ideal for the installation.” Perfect for applications where walls are inaccessible or plant room is restricted, the
frame mounted Ultramax WM cascade systems are designed to make installation and commissioning simple. Mounted on a steel frame, and with castors to make positioning easy, the frame mounted boilers are slim enough to fit through a standard width door and light enough to be manoeuvred by two people. The Xpressflo range of hot water generators delivers high volumes of hot water and consistently high efficiency thanks to their inventive design. A gas-fired, low-emission, condensing unit is used in conjunction with stainless steel storage vessels of 300 or 500 litres.
Both units have a powerful heat input of 60kW to deliver up to 650 litres of hot water.
Even though the primary function of Xpressflo is to deliver efficiently generated hot water, it can also deliver a central heating service of up to 43kW where there is no hot water load.

Meet Nigel Cook, one of over 50 engineers that make up ABB’s Energy Appraisal Team. As part of ABB’s energy appraisal, Nigel prepares an Executive Summary and a detailed engineer’s report,
including photographs, highlighting applications that can save the most energy. The reports show recommendations for fitting drives and high efficiency motors, monthly energy savings, CO2
emissions reduction and the projected payback.
