Do we really need a wedding website? If so, where should we start?

Julie, a wedding website can be a great way to communicate with your guests and provide them with useful information about your wedding. If you are planning a destination wedding, it is pretty much a necessity! It’s a great place to share travel and destination information, as well as information about your wedding weekend events.
But where should you start? If you are already using wedding planning tools on a website such as The Knot or Wedding Wire, you may want to look into their options. There are also stand-alone wedding websites available that offer some great functionality. Whichever you choose, be sure that your site has the following features:
Easy to Use. Make sure that your website is not only easy for your guests to navigate, but also easy for you to create.
A short domain name. Buy a domain name on
GoDaddy.com (like
JulieandJeffWedding.com) and point it to your wedding website. This will make it easier to find.
RSVP Capture. Choose a website that allows your guests to RSVP online. Some allow you to then download this information in a spreadsheet (like Google Weddings).
Links to your Registry. Be sure to link to your wedding registry so guests can find it easily.
Links to hotels. If you’ve set-up a block at a hotel, have them give you a link so that your guests can book online.
A wedding website can really be helpful to you in the long run so the time investment upfront will be worth it.

Google Weddings websites
Instead of a wedding website, we’re thinking of using Facebook. What do you think?

Christina, if you want to go this route, the best way is by creating a “closed group” and inviting your friends and family that you are inviting to the wedding to join the group. That way you can limit who will see this information and friends who are not invited won’t feel left out.
In the invite to the group, be sure to explain why you are creating this group— in order to share information about your wedding. You’ll also want to note this on your save the date and be sure to share links to hotel information with the group.
You can create events in your group and ask for RSVP’s via your group page as well. This is an important feature for a wedding website and should be incorporated if you are using Facebook in its place.
You may find it easier and more helpful to create both a wedding website and a group on Facebook. This may help increase the lines of communication and ensure that your guests are well informed about your big day.
