The Derby Open Gallery Rifle Match
The East Midlands is a region blessed with some excellent gallery rifle facilities and happily both Mattersey and Derby Clubs host national events so that we can all share in their good fortune. The summer GR calendar is very crowded but Derby seems to have laid claim to the last weekend in June over recent years.
I have recently commented on the growing popularity of long barrelled pistols (LBP) and every competition at Derby was contested with this class of firearm. Of the 475 scorecards submitted, 135 of them were shot with an LBP - more than a quarter of all the matches shot! The LBP of choice to date has been the converted Browning Buckmark rifle, with shortened - and in some cases lightened - barrel and the shoulder stock substituted for a balance bar. The resultant gun is handy and well balanced and with 22 rim-fire ammunition being inexpensive and readily available it is easy to understand their popularity. The 2011 Derby Open GR Match was held over the weekend of 25th/26th June at their range near the village of Twyford. The decision to stage events like this should not be taken lightly and necessitates a great deal of commitment but the Derby Club always delivers with a well organised and executed programme that consistently attracts high number of competitors. The well established event also attracts excellent sponsorship, which is reflected in the well stocked prize table.

Timed and Precision Three
I have set out this season to try out some new events and particularly those that attract fewer entries, in the hope of raising their profile. I particularly enjoyed the 100/200/300 yard Gallery Rifle at the Phoenix and at Derby I entered the Timed and Precision Three with my long barrelled revolver .
