This SMALLBORE Business Something of major importance- The FOLLOW THROUGH
No matter what the shooting discipline - even rapid- fire pistol - the shot is not finished until the projectile is through the target and into the stop butt.
I am often astounded at the fullbore shooters, who have an unimpressive record when it comes to following the shot through. This problem is steeped in tradition, even with my own fullbore techniques. Back in my early days, (with Lee Enfield .303) I was taught to get onto the spotting-scope as fast as possible just so I could see the bullet go into the plate - or where it went if I missed it!
It wasn’t until after my transition to smallbore that I woke-up to the importance of follow-through as extremely high on the factor of techniques and became very aware that it made an huge difference.
Why is this? Well, if I have to tell you, you need to read this! I can assure you all, that if I ‘wake up’ this aspect of your technique and have you recognise what it does, your scores will improve, believe me.

In the case of shooting smallbore prone at high level, if you fail on one single shot your world record is gone. Following the shot through is crucial.
In terms of single-shot techniques, if the shot is not followed through correctly, you may get a loose ten, (or even a solid ten) for the shot but the techniques are breaking down, with the resultant loss of accuracy later in the shoot. Lack of follow-through can creep in slowly, even to the point of not even knowing it, until the entire match is completed and the score suffering - big time! The standard of smallbore prone demands 100% these days and I have seen a match where there were no less than FIVE 600 scores fired. Think on this a bit - two poor blokes shot 600 points and did not win a medal!
I can wax lyrical about this all day and in fact have written and coached for well over 30 years on this very
