Competitions

Our 600 yard benchrest championship runs over the winter period – between the end of the 2010 season and the start of the 2011 season.

As always, we run two classes – Light Gun and Factory Sporter. Whereas the big magnums tend to rule at 1000 yards, at 600 it’s down to the smaller cartridges like the 6BR, 6x47, 6XC or 6.5x47. I shoot my little 22 Dasher and on a good day, it will do the business (one win this season) and similarly with Jack Gibb, who won the Light Gun Championship with his 6BR Stolle.

Jack didn’t have any outright wins but consistency tends to win championships. Other wins were down to Steve Barrett with his 6XC, Jeanette Whitney with her 6.5x47 and Brian Walker and his 6.5-284. However, Steve Dunn’s 1.975 inch group (22BR) was the smallest of the season.

In Factory Sporter, there isn’t the same choice of cartridge in suitable ‘out of the box’ factory guns but the 6.5-284 Savage is well capable at 600 yards and 1000 yards. Phil Gibbon won the Championship last year with his but this year, Toni Young put one over on the lads with her very standard 308 Remington, taking four outright wins.

In fact, Toni’s performance was good enough for fourth place in the Light Gun Class and she also claimed small ‘factory’ group of the season with a remarkable 2.46 incher – excellent shooting.

Jack Gibb with the smell of success !!! Winner Light Gun Class

Toni Young - Winner Factory Class

In all, over 40 shooters contested the Championship. It’s a good place to start benchrest – not quite as daunting as 1000 yards and not as specialised as 100 yards. Our 2011/2012 season starts on November 5th. Yes, it will be cold but the Diggle covered firing-point is close to the Range House, so shoot your group and go have a warm and a cuppa!

Forthcoming events

Our next Diggle 100/1000 yard benchrest weekend will be the weekend of September 10/11th but in August, we will have two teams of four contesting the World Championships at Volmerange in France. Full report next month.
