Weir BDK putting down strong roots

On his last visit to Weir BDK in May, Weir CEO Keith Cochrane planted the sapling of a banyan tree in a school playground. Alongside Weir India Country Head, Naveen Ganzu, the gesture marked the partnership between Weir BDK and the local government in upgrading the local primary school in Gokul, the latest step in Weir’s support for local communities where we operate.

Weir BDK is, relatively speaking, a sapling in the context of the Group, joining in October 2010. The integration process continues to progress well. The strategy followed is to build competencies through training and awareness, improve communication and implement the Weir Production System (WPS). One first step was to set up a war room to monitor backlogs to help ensure future customer satisfaction. The war room was implemented in December 2010. Along with an initial audit, a second in May this year showed a 22% improvement.

Training and implementation of Health, Safety & Environment standards were fast tracked to ensure strict adherence to Group policy. Lean awareness training was rolled out across the organisation. The importance of ‘doing it right’ and adherence to the Weir Commercial Policy were also stressed as fundamental to The Weir Way.

Weir Group CEO, Keith Cochrane as well

as Dean Jenkins, Divisional Managing Director, Power & Industrial, have visited the facility twice since acquisition to review the progress of integration and to provide feedback to the various work streams in operation on the site. A global layout team visited Hubli in May 2011, defining a Lean layout which will be implemented over two years. A cross functional team involving colleagues across the globe is involved in the ongoing development of a robust strategy to define the future path for the business. Weir BDK has been busy winning new orders with leading steel contractors in India, as well as winning a first order for a large oil company in Kuwait. The business has also made inroads into Ghana’s Oil & Gas sector with the supply of valves for storage oil tanking.

Order success for Weir India

India’s largest steel producer by capacity, JSW Steel Limited has placed an order for more than 100 CAVEX hydrocyclones after a successful operational trial. The trial involved simultaneous operation with competitors’ cyclones for comparative analysis. All existing cyclones are being replaced with CAVEX hydrocyclones. R.B. Seth Shreeram Narsingdas Mines, one of India’s leading iron ore producers, awarded Weir India an order of Linatex screens. Weir India will supply the screens for dewatering applications for the mines’ Jig plant expansion project. The business also bagged contracts for supplying pumps in ash handling ap-

plications from Macawber Beekay and Tecpro Systems limited, India’s leading EPC contractors for the power sector. The contracts strengthen the foothold of Weir India in the highly competitive Indian power sector.

In addition to recent success in the Indian market Weir India continues to ex- pand its product ranges in support of the Weir Group worldwide. Isogate(R) Slurry valves are now manufactured for WS, WB and WH knife gate models.
