Multi-Million Dollar Nuclear Power Contract for Control Valves in South Korea


Weir Control & Choke Valves in the UK has been awarded a contract from


Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. Ltd. to design, manufacture and supply over 100 control valves for safety related and severe service applications for two units of the Shin Uljin nuclear power plant currently under construction in South Korea. South Korea is positioning itself to be a major global manufacturer of nuclear power plants. Last year, it was awarded its first overseas contract for a total of four APR1400 reactors, to be built at the new Braka nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates. It is also actively pursuing other overseas opportunities in addition to further investment in domestic plants. Weir valves, required for use on the critical


safety related applications, will undergo an extensive programme of qualification testing to ensure they fully meet design requirements. Actuators and instrumentation are also required to comply with relevant standards for safety related equipment. This contract award represents the culmination of significant efforts from a range

of functions including engineering, supply chain, sales and quality departments. It is a major step forward for Weir Control & Choke Valves as the safety-related valves require a full


nuclear qualification programme in accordance with ASME QME-1 2000 requirements. The order was secured against strong competition from other global control valve manufacturers.

Anglo American recently awarded Weir Minerals Chile with a multi million dollar order for cyclone feed pumps – the 750MC mill circuit pumps, the biggest rubber lined pump manufactured for such an application - cyclones, valves, expansion joints , spools and rubber lined products. The project will kick-off in October, this year, with further anticipated service and technical assistance offering.
