Strong progress on learning and development

Keith Cochrane joins delegates at the first learning event

In last December’s Bulletin, Group Head of Learning & Development, Jim McHarg, set out the priorities for Weir in this area for 2011 and beyond. Here is an update on the progress being made – it’s been a busy time.

Weir Leadership Programme Launched at the start of 2011, The Weir Leadership Programme is now well underway with three waves established. A total of 84 participants attended the first

of two learning events. The focus has been on what has made them successful to date, their current reality, what they still need to do to become a high performing, strategic Weir Leader and how they can lead their teams even more effectively in the future. Each participant brings a business chal- lenge and clear learning goals with them to the programme. In addition, they receive valu- able feedback during the programme from a 360° Weir Leader assessment and a psycho- logical preference questionnaire. Facilitated learning groups of six participants support each member to meet their learning goals and these run throughout the programme. In addi- tion to this, communities have been set up on

learning event will be on collaboration, stra- tegic innovation, leading and implementing change, coaching and high performing teams. All of the Senior Management Group (SMG) will have the opportunity to participate in the programme, which will run until the end of 2013.

Feedback from participants in the pro- gramme has been extremely positive. Mike Ferrucci, VP Finance and Administration Weir Power & Industrial - Isolation Valves said, “I am looking forward to the next seven months’ learning journey and attending the second learning event in September. I truly believe that I will grow as a Weir Leader having par- ticipated in this programme”. Emerging Leaders Programme

As part of the Weir Management and Leader- ship Development Framework, an Emerging Leaders Programme is soon to be launched for nominated managers and employees who aspire to be Weir Leaders in the future. The programme has been designed in conjunction with the University of Strathclyde and will start in October this year. The subjects covered include managing people in organi- sations, financial management, commercial, operations management, innovation and project management - all of which will lead to a postgraduate Certificate in Management.
