News Industry Comment Branson recognised for founding Carbon War Room

I’ve just returned the Bosch Technology Horizons Awards presentation event. This annual essay writing competition is open to students in the 14-18 and 19-24 age groups and this year it attracted over 800 quality entries from over a 100 different education establishments. In recognition of Bosch’s 125th anniversary, the two topics offered for the essays were: How will engineering and technology change the way we live in the next 125 years? And, what do you think was Robert Bosch’s greatest engineering achievement in his lifetime and why? The students tackled both of these tricky subjects head on and came up with some extremely interesting and thought provoking essays that really impressed the judges. Alongside the essay writing competition, Bosch also ran a trophy building exercise where students were given a range of Bosch products and asked to use them in various ways to make a trophy for the winners of the essay writing competition. Once again the students really impressed with their ingenuity and creativity when producing these entries. The presentation event was hosted by engineer and television presenter, Kate Bellingham and included a lively discussion on the essay topics and the future of engineering in general. It was a really interesting day and at a time when there has been a lot of negative publicity for further education in UK, mainly centred around increased tuition fees, it was great to see young people so enthused about engineering. Well done to the winners, Felicity Harer from Leicester University (14- 18) and Norman KK Ng from Imperial College London (19-24). And well done to Bosch for getting young people involved in engineering for the benefit of us all. Neil Mead - Managing Editor

Sir Richard Branson has been awarded the Frost & Sullivan 2011 Growth, Innovation and Leadership (GIL) Award. The Virgin Group founder is being recognised for his leadership in founding the Carbon War Room, the influential energy and envi- ronment focused non-profit organisation. The award was presented by Frost & Sullivan Chairman, David Frigstad at the group’s GIL 2011: Europe event at the Emirates Stadium in London. Frigstad said: “The CEO’s world is a 24/7 com- plex business universe. It moves at light speed and grows more challenging each day. It requires preci- sion, confidence and visionary leadership. Not only has Richard Branson set the bar in these areas, but he continues to challenge the norm, redefining the needs of industry and global challenges of the world in which we live. We are proud to applaud and celebrate his lifelong achievements." The Carbon War Room focuses on achieving bil-

lion ton (gigaton-scale) reductions in CO2 emissions by harnessing entrepreneurship to unlock wealth

and prosperity across the economy. By bringing project finance and growth capital together with infrastructure entrepreneurs, corporates, govern- ments and NGOs, Carbon War Room identifies and eliminates market barriers driving environmental improvements alongside economic growth. Brian Denker, vice president of growth, innova- tion and leadership for Frost & Sullivan com- mented: “The impact Carbon War Room is having is remarkable. We also wanted to acknowledge Richard’s work with partners on the frontlines to tackle tough social and environmental challenges with talented people and innovative approaches. www.carbonwarroom.com Takeover boosts business for APG

Engineering company, Anderson Precision Gearing (APG), is emerging from the recession with a host of business opportunities. The company created 28 new jobs while enjoying heightened demand from clients in the con- struction, agricultural, transport and renewable energy industries. The company was acquired by Pailton Engineering in December, a move said to have breathed new life into Lanarkshire-based

APG, which has more than 100 years experience in gear and gearbox manufacture. Investment in machinery, expansion of the product range and the creation of new jobs have meant significant expansion for APG.

Clive Brimmell, sales manager said: “The expansion and success of any company in what have been and continue to be harsh economic times, should be cele- brated and we are delighted at the upturn in business.

“APG, working with Pailton Engineering, will continue to deliver engineering excellence and expand even further, with the creation of even more jobs. “We hope many other British companies also see an upturn in business as the recovery of the delicate economy continues.” With its roots in the mining industry, APG offers a compre- hensive gear manufacturing solu- tion alongside total engineering capability from concept design through to manufacture. www.apg-gears.com

Service engineers take part in tough challenges for charities

Employees at rotary vane com- pressor manufacturer Mattei have raised money for two worthy causes.

Service engineer Adrian Davis ran the London Marathon and raised £300 for Cancer Research UK. He completed the marathon in four hours and 59 minutes and is planning to enter the ballot for

a place in the 2012 event. Lee Lodge, also a service engineer at Mattei, took part in the Heather’s Cycle of Life, contributing to the overall total of £23,000 raised. Lodge, a keen cyclist, joined the sponsored bike ride to raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund set up following the England footballer’s battle with

bowel cancer to also raise money for Cancer Research UK. Andy Jones, general manager of Mattei, applauded their efforts; “It is great to see the team from Mattei supporting charitable causes and undertaking gruelling tasks to raise much needed funds for these charities.” www.mattei.co.uk
