Forklift shielded against radiation

In response to the worst nuclear acci- dent in Japan’s his- tory, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has developed the

a radiation-shielded forklift cabin. Operators will be able to dis- pose of contaminated rubble quicker which is currently being handled by radio-controlled heavy equipment.

Constructed using 100mm thick steel plates and 230mm thick lead glass, the air-condi- tioned cabin is equipped with special filters to remove dust and other contamination. It is also pressurised to prevent external air from entering. www.mitforklift.com

Chain wear check

The forklift truck engineers of tomorrow are learning the impor- tance of regular chain inspec- tions with the help of FB Chain’s popular chain wear gauge. Students at the City of Bristol college are using the gauges as part of their forklift maintenance course work.

“Chain wear gauges are used by forklift truck and other materi- als handling equipment service engineers and technicians to track chain wear at each service. If a chain is shown to have worn excessively it must be replaced, or lives could be at risk so this is a key part the training,” says lecturer Geoff Tucker. www.chainweargauge.com
