Temporary building has multi-purpose

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe has extended the hire of a Spaciotempo temporary building after it proved to excel in more than just the intended application

F

ujitsu Telecommunications Europe, part of the worldwide Fujitsu Group, is a supplier of next generation telecommunica- tions technology and services across 95 countries globally, to network oper- ators and service providers. It spe- cialises in providing integrated end-to-end access network solutions – from initial design, development and manufacture through to network implementation, support, operation and ongoing management.

Its technology is installed in telephone exchanges and commercial premises, delivering broadband services to millions of homes and businesses. In the UK, Fujitsu’s technology accounts for over eight million lines of DSL broadband, and is one of the largest suppliers of broadband access solutions. Employing more than 700 people, the company’s West Midlands site encompasses carrier networks and services, plus alternative carrier business, as well as operations, R&D, sales and marketing, administration and legal and commercial.

The company originally specified the 10 x 20 x 5.2m, aluminium framed building on a three-month rental con- tract at its West Midlands site. The structure was to provide a secure storage and workshop facility for the refurbishment of a customer’s high-specification telecommunica- tions HGVs – which serves as an emer- gency mobile telephone exchange. However, once complete, operations planning and supply chain develop- ment manager David Macready realised the building could be put to use protecting components from inclement weather and subsequently extended the terms. When the next of Fujitsu’s five specialist HGVs requires refurbishment work, the building will revert to its original purpose. Macready says: “We have specified Spaciotempo temporary structures before for storage purposes, so this was a natural evolution of the relationship when we had a new requirement. The flexibility of the Spaciotempo offering

has enabled us to overcome space con- straints on site and allowed us to meet stringent security needs. Despite being a temporary building, it provides decent working conditions, protected from the elements and is totally secure. Featuring a roller shutter door, access is only enabled via key entry and due to the lack of groundworks we were able to position the building in the confined space between trees and existing landscaped areas, in full view of our security cameras.

“Furthermore, when the original project was completed, a predicted upturn in a separate business area resulted in the need for a warm, dry storage area. The versatility of the building meant it was able to fulfil this

role. With the first project funding the initial outlay, this is an extremely cost effective ongoing solution for us.” One of the leading providers of tem- porary buildings, Spaciotempo, offers off-the-shelf and bespoke solutions for companies with temporary structure requirements. The inherent strength of the buildings – built to BS standards - is gained from the aluminium box pro- file frame which provides snow and wind loadings that are equivalent to permanent structures. The roof, manu- factured from the most durable PVC coated polyester, is flame retardant.

ubb Buildings has introduced Thermohall, said to be an innovative means to insulate membrane buildings. Development of the Thermohall concept began several years ago in Norway. The goal was to engineer a cost- effective, practical and eco-friendly insulation system for relocatable membrane clad structures. Thermohall is now fully designed, tested and proven and features a number of innovative advantages. The Thermohall product has been widely welcomed by customers and Thermohall building projects have been successful in locations exposed to extreme weather. The membrane cladding of a Thermohall building is

R

manufactured using a high strength 28oz/sy PVC (+/- 1000g/m²) coated polyester fabric outer membrane with self-cleaning exterior finish. This is the same strength material used on un-insulated Rubb buildings. PVC battens are welded to the outer cladding panels at regular intervals

and then to the inner fabric panels to create closed cells to hold the glass wool insulation. The 19oz/sy (+/-650g/m²) inner fabric is white and has a self-cleaning coating on the inside face. Glass wool insulation batts are enclosed within the completed PVC assembly which is finish sealed to pre- vent moisture entering.

A Thermohall building is claimed to offer high structural integrity and the Thermohall membrane is said to be highly resistant to tearing, stretching and movement under load – even in extreme weather conditions. It is fastened to the outside of the galvanized support structure and virtually eliminates thermal bridging and air infiltration through the building envelope. This means it can offer greater overall system thermal resistance than other systems provided with greater insulation thickness. Rubb Buildings www.rubb.com
