Toyota demonstrates specialist warehouse equipment at TCS&D
Toyota Material Handling UK is to showcase its latest range of warehouse trucks at the Temperature Controlled Storage and Distribution (TCS&D) exhibi- tion on 14 - 15 September 2011 at EXEC, Peterborough. Toyota will be showcasing a range of warehouse equipment
suitable for chilled and cold store environments including: a BT Reflex reach truck fitted with a cold store cabin, a BT Levio ride- on powered pallet truck and a selection of BT Lifter hand pallet trucks that are ideal for both warehousing and distribution applications. In addition, Toyota will also demonstrate the latest BT Radioshuttle which is a high-per- formance solution for efficient handling of goods in high-density racking. BT Radioshuttle is based on electrically powered load carri- ers that transport goods in and out of storage tunnels within specially designed racking. Individual load carriers can be quickly and easily transferred between different stor- age locations by a conventional forklift truck, adding flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

Safer handling solution for solar firm
Wilmat, a Birmingham-based manufacturer of materials handling equipment has signif- icantly reduced the risk of accidents and saved valuable operator costs for PV Crystalox Solar PLC, a leading manufac- turer of specialist components for state-of- the-art solar power systems. Wilmat provided the solution after the findings of a wide-ranging risk assessment highlighted the risk of operators slipping when using manual loading trolleys at PV Crystalox’s Oxfordshire plant.
Mark Jefferies, manager block produc- tion, Silicon Production Department at PV Crystalox Solar, explains that staff load ingots weighing up to 500kg into cutting booths. “Whilst we didn’t have any accidents with the previous manual loading trolleys, the risk assessment highlighted the potential danger of operators slip- ping on the slurry produced from the cutting operation,” he says. “The trolleys also required two people to operate them and when fully loaded they could weigh almost one tonne, making using them very physically demanding.” Wilmat developed an ideal solution in the form of a specially designed Bulldog WHCTS12 Pedestrian Counterbalance Truck. As a result, the new trucks have reduced the risks of accidents, whilst cut- ting the manpower required for the loading and cutting operation. Jefferies continues: “Having a machine that is reliable, easy to use and can be operated safely, is also essential to us. The Bulldog WHCTS12 Pedestrian Counterbalance Truck has been perfect for the job.” The success of the trucks, which are serviced on site, comes as no sur- prise to Andrew Capella, technical director at Wilmat, who has built up a close business relationship with PV Crystalox Solar. He says: “Wilmat offers a made to measure service for its customers so coming up with the correct solution was not a problem. However, progress meetings proved invaluable in keeping PV Crystalox Solar fully informed about its order.”
