Products Waste management & recycling Partnership produces new bins
Taylor, the UK market leader in metal waste recycling containers for external use, is also establishing itself as a major supplier of commercial internal waste recycling bins, as a result of the company’s resale partnerships with leading manufacturers Rubbermaid and Beca Bins.
“This is a logical vertical integration for our business,” says Bob Harris, Taylor UK sales manager. “We are already the leading supplier of external waste and recycling containers in the UK, so it makes sense that we should provide internal ones as well, giving commercial customers a total offering and the benefits of a single source supply for waste containers.” The partnership with Rubbermaid allows
Taylor to offer a wide range of internal con- tainers for waste recycling. In addition, by working with Becca Bins Taylor can offer a new range of internal containers for the collection of mixed recyclables. H. Taylor & Co T: 01299 251333

Baler investment improves efficiency for paper recycler Smurfit Kappa Recycling, one of the largest recyclers of paper
and cardboard in the UK, has invested £650,000 in a new Lyndex BiMax 145 baler at its Birmingham depot. The powerful Lyndex baler enables Smurfit Kappa Recycling to produce up to 26 high density bales per hour. It is self-clean- ing, runs cooler and more quietly than the machine it replaces and features an automatic shut off for greater operational safety. The new baler will help to produce efficiency gains in han- dling, storage and transportation of material to the company’s paper mills. It compacts material in its 2,000mm length press box to less than 300mm to ensure a high density bale. The machine’s shear presses allow the processing of long material such as carpet tubes with no interruption to production times. Triangular shaped blades on the moving platen give a smooth cutting action and reduce the force required to shear the material.
“At Smurfit Kappa Recycling we are committed to sustainable development as we strive to enhance our customer service and environmental performance. The investment in this new baler is further evidence of this commitment,” said Gary Grant, UK Operations Director Smurfit Kappa Recycling’s Birmingham depot, like all its operations nationally, is certified to BS EN ISO14001, the internationally-recognised Environmental Management System Standard, and OHSAS18001, the Occupational Health and Safety Management System Standard. Drive swappage scheme leads to new recycling high Continued growth in companies replacing old vari-
able-speed drives for new has led to ABB’s recycling scheme reaching a new high of 100 metric tons of drives. Drive users have been encouraged to replace old drives for newer more efficient models by ABB’s swappage scheme, which offers at least 17.5 per cent discount on the purchase cost, as well as help obtaining government aid under various national energy saving initiatives.
ABB collects waste drives, either its own or those produced by other manufacturers, through bins sited at the premises of ABB Drives Alliance members. Although not required to by the WEEE Directive, ABB offers the recycling scheme as a service to its cus- tomers. In the case of large drives or large quantities of smaller drives, ABB’s approved waste carrier S2S Lifecycle Services collects directly from the end user. The drives are recycled in accordance with the Environment Protection Act of 1990 and the WEEE directive guidelines. All old drives are stripped down to recover any recyclable materials such as
18 New vehicles improve waste collection
Ken Mallinson Transport has cemented its relationship with recycling specialist Sunersol, with the launch of 11 new Sunersol liv- eried vehicles. Sunersol has dedi- cated contract vehicles from Ken Mallinson to aid the collections of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Six of the liv- eried vehicles are curtain trailers,
two of the vehicles are 26 tonne rigid vehicles and there is also one high cube wagon and drag rigid vehicle, articulated tipper trailer, as well as a hook load vehicle with trailers for roll on and roll off container movements nationwide. Mallinsons offers a full fleet management programme with regular servicing in line with the transport regulations. It operates throughout the UK to collect WEEE waste from HWRC (house- hold waste recycling centres), businesses and retailers on a daily basis. Ken Mallinson Transport T: 01226 389450

system is recycled GroundMate is a new ground protection system manufactured solely from UK recycled plastic waste which has been launched by Centriforce Products, one of the UK’s largest independent plastics recyclers. GroundMate is said to offer a tough and durable substitute to traditional ground protection materials such as plywood. Water and slip-resistant, it will not rot or delami- nate and is claimed to cost up to 50 per cent less than alternative systems. Designed to protect soft and/or sensi- tive ground from machinery and vehicles, GroundMate is expected to find applications in a wide range of construction and civil engineering projects. It has been successfully tested for vehicles up to 30 tonnes. Centriforce managing director, Simon
copper, aluminium and circuit boards and old elec- trolytic capacitors are removed for safe disposal. The S2S site has a full waste management permit and is registered as an approved authorised treat- ment facility (AATF) under the WEEE directive. Up to 90 per cent, by weight, of ABB’s drives can be reused or recycled. Once the drive has been removed for recycling, ABB issues a certificate that can be used for environmental audits by end users complying with ISO 14001.
By choosing to replace an older drive with a new model, users can make an immediate impact on their carbon footprint. Depending on size, operating a drive for just half a day could cut enough carbon emissions to fully compensate for the carbon impact of manufacturing and disposal of the drive itself. An ABB industrial drive can typically provide a total lifetime savings of around 7,500MWh or 3,800 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. ABB
