ABB’s expanded product range set to revolutionize robotic palletizing

L

Land Rover opts for unloading protection

conic car manufacturer, Land Rover, has taken delivery of a modular canopy building at its Solihull based car plant to provide protection from inclement weather conditions for delivery drivers and workers responsible for unloading goods and components. The canopy, supplied by Spaciotempo UK Ltd, a leading provider of temporary structures to industry, is located adjacent to the assembly plant with a further structure providing an undercover link between the buildings – ensuring goods arrive in clean, dry and in tip top condition. The 600 sq m building has an eave height of 6m and a ridge height of 11m which provides ample space for large trucks to be comfortably unloaded. The frame is manufactured from anodised aluminium and has snow and wind loading equivalent to permanent buildings, providing a robust solution for the delivery of goods. Securely fixed to a hard standing area at the plant, the canopy was efficiently installed by the Spaciotempo team using a proven hard ground fixing system which negates the need for lengthy civils work prior to installation.

eading ABB’s new palletizing offering is the compact, 110 kg capacity, IRB 460 robot. Capable of up to 2,190 cycles per hour, this 4-axis robot is perfect for high-speed end-of-line palletizing. It has a reach of 2.4 meters, occupies 20 per cent less floor space and runs 15% faster than its nearest rivals. For high-output full-layer palletizing, the IRB 760 robot boasts an impressive payload capacity of 450 kilograms and a reach of 3.2 meters. This robot features high wrist inertia enabling it to rotate heavier and larger products. The most revolutionary aspect of the new palletizing portfolio is ABB’s new PC software, RobotStudio Palletizing PowerPac. This program enables users to configure, simulate and program ABB robots, with little or no experience required.

George Utz is Flying High with New Air Cargo Innovation G

eorge Utz, the leading manufacturer of materials handling solutions in plastic, has won substantial European grant funding for the research and development of a new Unit Load Device (ULD) for the global air cargo supply chain. Working in partnership with Leicester based innovation and technology development organisation New Wave Innovation, George Utz

applied for the grant for its SAFEGUARD project under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) which is the EU’s main instrument for funding research and technological developments in Europe. The SAFEGUARD project will develop a new technology to improve the security and efficiency of air cargo through the research and development of a second generation Unit Load Device (ULD). With around 1 million ULDs around the world, carrying approximately 80 million tonnes of cargo, they are a crucial element of the global aviation industry.

developing Chinese energy from waste sector, winning four new orders for a total of twelve process crane systems. An increasing volume of domestic and commercial refuse from China’s most densely populated urban areas has created significant opportunities for the generation of electricity via waste incineration. Such activities are sparing the use of fossil fuels, reducing overall CO2 emissions and limiting the volume of waste sent to landfill sites. Demag Cranes has been working closely with a

number of Chinese energy from waste operators in the development of new plants. Demag Cranes has been awarded an order to supply four automated crane systems for a new energy from waste facility at Laogang, Shanghai. Each of the 33.3m span, 18 tonne SWL cranes will be fitted with a 12 cu m grab and will benefit from high operating speeds for large capacity handling. The automatic systems will operate 24/7,

blending and moving 1,800 tonnes of refuse per day,

filling the refuse bunkers, which feed the incineration furnaces. Demag Cranes has also won three other orders from Chinese energy from waste operators, for an additional eight process cranes.

n a major development for the coding and marking industry, Linx Printing Technologies has launched a radically new design of continuous ink jet (CIJ) printer developed to suit production line needs.

New printer delivers a step change in coding design I

The new Linx CJ400 promises unique portability, fastest set-up and the most simple to use printer. The Linx CJ400 was unveiled at Interpack 2011 in Dusseldorf in May and will be available globally from July. More product details will be available from 15 June at www.linxglobal.com. A key innovation of the Linx CJ400 is its Easi-Change® Service Module, which can be changed in minutes using on-screen prompts. This means that scheduled maintenance is easily completed without the need for a trained technician or costly service calls – a major advantage for smaller customers or those in remote regions.

Further

self-maintenance features include on-screen trouble shooting, which can solve the majority of operating issues without the need to consult manuals or engineers.
