This expressed the town’s aspiration to position itself closer to neighbouring Surrey towns, both in visual appeal and in the quality of its amenities.

A programme to clean up Caterham was developed. Other initiatives included upgrading the environment in the town centre and establishing a loyalty scheme to encourage local trade.

The last twelve months have seen the vision become a reality. Visually the project has exceeded expectations and the volunteer group has earned respect and credibility within the town and from local government and the service providers involved.

The project has helping to build a strong community team that has brought the town a festival, a business-to- business exhibition, a music event, a food festival and related ideas such as a community radio station.

Shabby to Smart won the Environment and Culture category of the South East Action for Market Towns Awards

Reports by the Civic Trust and Lockwood (retail consultants) concluded that Wallingford’s economy needed to develop.

The town council carried out a town Healtcheck, which was completed in early summer 2008. Wallingford Partnership began a consultation process involving residents, local councillors and local parish councillors.

It also visited care homes where residents were not able to attend the public meetings

The outcome of the consultation was an action plan that proposed a series of measures. One proposal was a series of walks around the local area supported by leaflets and MP3 audio guides.

Other suggestions included installing wifi internet access across the town centre, improving direction signs and information boards around the town. All of these projects have now been completed or are nearing completion.

Exploiting Wallingford’s Rich History won the Partnership and Strategic Working category of the South East Action for Market Towns Awards.

These town partnerships have grown at different rates and developed different priorities and focus, but all have continued to meet with the ongoing help and support of the county council.

It began following a Healthcheck in 2008, which generated a great deal of interest within the local communities so a series of public action planning workshops were held in the towns in Spring 2009.

Working with the council’s regeneration team, the town partnerships have been involved in a wide variety
