What’s In Thame started as a community website designed to bring local information together in one place that was easy to access with a business directory to help generate revenue. This has now developed into a collaboration between multiple local organisations and led to the creation of more than 27 town-based websites.
An unexpected benefit has been that it has helped to deliver social and community projects by enabling locals to get involved in new initiatives. These include the Give it a Go day for sports and the streaming of brand new community-driven video content on the website. Barnard Castle’s shop vacancy rate dropped from around
19% in 2007 to 5% in late 2010 thanks in part to Barnard Castle Vision’s shop improvement grants, which were introduced to conserve and restore frontages. The grant scheme, launched in 2009, was extended for the 2010-11 financial year to include repairs. A second grant was launched to assist with remodelling empty shops with a new tenant ready.
