Shifnal Festival was commended in the Business and Economy category of the West Action for Market Towns Awards.
Community Centre Abbey Fields Community Centre is housed in 100-year- old, energy-inefficient former school buildings. Rocketing energy costs over the last few years spurred the Community Centre team into action.
From March 2010, they tackled roof and wall insulation, replaced single with double glazing and installed a 10KWp Solar PV Panel system that promises income or cost reductions of around £3,800 a year. The Greening of Abbey Fields Community Centre was commended in the Environment and Culture category of the West Action for Market Towns Awards.
10 ENVIRONMENT & CULTURE
This unique festival is designed to celebrate cultural diversity around Yate and involves a large part of the community - as performers, activity leaders, stall holders or food providers.
Visitors to the event get an insight into different cultures through games, costume, food, and contemporary and traditional music and dance. The 6th festival takes place in July 2011.
Yate International Festival was commended in the Social and Community category of the West Action for Market Towns Awards.
The Family Cycle Day provided an opportunity for families to enjoy a day out, be entertained and to have the chance to visit a variety of stalls and activities relating to different aspects of cycle safety. The highlight of the day was a managed cycle ride.
The Bothal Woods project is part of an initiative to make country and riverside walks in and around Morpeth more accessible. The route was identified as a priority for
improvement because despite its popularity with generations of local people it had become virtually impassable. The worst sections of the footpath have been improved, footbridges and steps repaired and seating provided in a way that is sympathetic to the ancient woodland.
