Dear Readers
This Summer hundreds of eager beauty students will have graduated fromtheir courses, hungry for a career in their chosen field. If you are one of these, or someone looking for a new position, then I dedicate this column to you.
Gaining your first employment is never easy, nomatter what’s happening in the economy, and I’msure you’ve been warned by lecturers, family and friends that it certainly won’t be any easier this year.
You do need to be realistic; withmany salon owners erring on the side of caution there will be less situations vacant so you will have to work hard to secure your preferred
job. This is where first impressions really do count.
Before you apply for any jobs, you need to create a spotless CV. If you’re unsure how to write a CV or letter of application, ask someone for help or look online, there are many websites with examples for you to look at. Remember to check your spelling and grammar - this is a good indication of your attention to detail.
Whilst your CV is a representation of you on paper, when it comes to attending an interview your appearance needs to be immaculate: understatedmake-up; clean, manicured nails; hair tied back neatly etc. If you know that your interview will involve some formof practical, which is likely, then wear your therapy uniform to demonstrate professionalismand help the salon owner to picture you working for them.
And if you’re interested in continuing your learning, as all good therapists should be, don’t be afraid to highlight this. It shows a dedication towards career progression, and your potential new employer will know that you are serious about beauty therapy as a career.
There’s somuchmore I could say, and regretfully there just isn’t the space in this column, but I wish you all the best of luck and hope that this summer, in the words of Lord Sugar at the end of his search for an apprentice, ‘You’re Hired!’
Best wishes
Melissa Dennis Editor
