DISCOP FOCUS TEN PEOPLE TO MEET

Zrinka Jankov Head, Doma TV

Zrinka Jankov has worked at Nova TV for the last nine years. She was Editor of movie pro- grammes on Nova TV until she was called to head up the launch of female-targeted entertainment channel Doma TV in January 2011.

Analogue switchover was com- pleted in Croatia last year, clear- ing the way for CME-owned

Nova to launch the female-skewed channel, the only one of its kind in that market.

On the main Nova channel, which has output deals with Sony and Warner Bros., the recent big hit has been Shine-dis- tributed cooking series MasterChef.

Doma, meanwhile, has been tuned to the recent trend for

Turkish drama. “At the end of last year a very strong new trend began on the Croatian market – Turkish drama series,” says Jankov. “This trend continues to grow in 2011. On Nova TV and Doma TV in primetime and beyond, Croatian viewers can see the best Turkish series like Asi, Ask-i-Memnu, Elveda Derken, Gumus and Yaprak Dokumu.” Jankov, who also attends MIP TV, MIPCOM and the LA Screenings, is looking for scripted and entertainment pro- gramming at Discop and Latin-originated telenovelas.

Vlad Riashyn CEO, Star Media Group

Vlad Riashyn is the chief executive of Star Media Group, one of Russia’s largest independent production companies. The company produces factual series and high-end dramas including Demons, which was nominated for an award at the Monte Carlo Television Festival.

It is also looking to produce local versions of international series; it recently inked a deal to produce a Russian version of FremantleMedia’s The IT Crowd.

Riashyn, who was previously chairman of the board at the Inter TV channel, will be at Discop to buy and sell; he will be discussing the producer’s latest television projects with Eastern European broadcasters and will also be meeting producers with new projects.

“Generally speaking, this market with its family spirit differs from other ones for its convenience; there is no rush and there is enough time to meet people in a calm atmosphere and even build friendships,” he says. Star will be focusing on Demons at this year’s event. The

crime drama, which stars Semion Strougachov and Aleksandr Dyachenko, was written by two former journalists Grigoriy and Sergey Kosariov. It airs on NTV in Russia and Riashyn is hope- ful that it will be a hit at Discop. “We have high hopes that the series will be of interest to our European partners,” he says. The company is also expanding. Last year it produced 35 tel- evision series and feature films and is looking to increase this to 2,500 hours next year. “We plan to increase this number next year and over 50 movies and series are being developed and produced now,” he adds.

Ondrej Zach Senior VP, programming and acquisitions, HBO Central Europe

Based in Prague, Ondrej Zach is responsi- ble for programming the bouquet of chan- nels across the fourteen countries in which HBO Central Europe operates. Prior to HBO, Zach was at TV Nova and is a well- known TV exec in the CEE region.

He says one of the appeals of Discop is that it is less manic than some of the larger markets. “Discop is one of the more relaxed industry gatherings where I can arrange to meet our key partners in a less hectic environment than other markets and talk through the details of deals that are already arranged, but where we have to agree the fine detail before they are signed,” he says.

The way the TV business is evolving means these kind of detailed discussions are more and more necessary, Zach adds. “People still need to talk to people in spite of email and smart phones, and these conversations have become increas- ingly detailed, because as technology continually introduces more and more ways of watching television, there are more details to be ironed out with every new deal. For example, now that we have HBO GO being rolled out across our region, we will only enter into negotiations if SVOD rights are avail- able, as well as linear rights, of course. And for this you need time, and the atmosphere at Discop provides just that.”
