Marathon launches hybrid series
DQE and ZDF team for 5 & IT
French producer and distributor Marathon and broadcaster France Télévisions are coproducing Ethan’s Island, a 26x30mins hybrid series that mixes 3D animation and live action using a technique never before utilised on TV. In France, the show will air on France 3. Head of youth programmes Julien Borde said: “It will offer a whole new entertainment experience to children and their parents.”
The commercial arm of German public broadcaster ZDF has got on board 5 & IT, a new €9.2 mil- lion (US$13.4 million) 3D kids cartoon series being produced by India-based producer DQ Entertainment. The series is based on the classic Edith Nesbit books and ZDF Enterprises will handle sales across Latin America, South Africa and most of Europe.

Italy’s Switchover launches L&M Italian kids channel operator Switchover Media has launched a licensing and merchandising division. Switchover Licensing will develop branding and L&M relating to shows on its two channels, K2 and Frisbee. Tiziana Barbuto has been hired to run the new unit.

kids book No Cookies for Trolls, by Cornelia Funke, the German author who has sold over ten million books. The plot centres on The Woodlies,
squirrel-sized trolls that are on a mis- sion to protect their forest from humans (or ‘Uglies’). The series is pitched as an action-
adventure-comedy with green mes-
sages.The target demographic is boys and girls aged between 6 and 11
