A leading supplier of power management and intelligent switchgear systems has taken delivery of a custom-built ROBUR truck from Stanley Handling. Mardix provides solutions to banks, financial institutions and other organisa- tions. Its installation team is frequently called upon to handle large switchgear cabinets, weighing up to two tonnes, in areas with restricted height clearance. This has necessitated tilting the equip- ment to enable positioning and has required a high degree of manual han- dling by teams of up to six operatives. The company’s own health and safety special-
ists identified the need for a mechanical alternative but amongst equipment sup- pliers contacted by Mardix, only Stanley Handling would undertake the project. The result was the ROBUR SBP/3030, effectively a pedestrian-operated, battery- powered straddle truck fitted with a unique clamping and tilting system. A special frame is attached to mounting points in the top of the cabinet enabling the ROBUR handler to engage with, tilt and lower the equipment to the horizontal where, once locked in place, it can safely and easily be moved to the desired location. With 3,000mm lift and 3,000kg weight capabil- ities and a host of safety innovations, the new truck, a finalist in the 2011 FLTA Awards, has simplified the task, reduced time and manpower requirements and exceeded health and safety demands. www.stanleyhandling.co.uk Line-side storage suits lean manufacturing
The trend toward lean, J.I.T. (just-in-time) manufacturing and concession stockholding requires amongst other things, effective and flexible storage systems which optimise space. With this in mind storage specialists Stakrak have introduced their Kanban line side storage racking system which facilitates the storage of components at the point-of-use, on the production line.
The Kanban system is said to be robust, yet lightweight and can be adapted and modified to fit most requirements and is a suitable solution for smaller components, such as fasteners and fixings. For example, the system
can have sloping shelves, to present containers for easy access and at the right height for operatives. Options include all metal shelves with plastic bins, or racks with particle board decks complete with plastic bins. This two bin arrangement can simplify stock rotation and replacement. Both bins can be loaded with stock, when the front bin is empty it can be simply removed to allow the second bin to slide into place while the other bin can be replenished with stock on the next visit. Bins can be colour-coded to enable easier identification of different components helping to speed-up the assembly, manufacturing process. Stakrak

Since its acquisition by The Constructor Group two years ago, the existing PSS product range has been assessed and additional products will now be offered to its customers. Building on the brand’s 40-year his- tory, PSS is introducing five new shelving systems, a construction system and plastic storage bins. Following the creation of a national distribution hub at Swindon in April last year and the introduc- tion of S90 shelving in June 2010, PSS intends to build on its success with the introduction of these

additional products. The current longspan shelving ranges, Shelfplan and Strongspan, are continuing and a number of new shortspan systems are now being added. Premier Office Shelving and Value Office Shelving systems are being launched, plus two Value Industrial Shelving systems. The fifth system to be added is a chrome wire shelving display unit, suit- able for front of house retail situations with the inten- tion to roll out further products later in the year. The PSS pallet racking ranges, Stronglock and Premierack, have undergone some development work and PSS will be launching a new ‘I beam’ profile to the market in the next few months, further increasing the variety of beam sections available for these ranges. Small parts storage is also included in the range for the first time and customers will be able to purchase versatile plastic storage containers and a multipur- pose construction system, called Punched Angle. MAY 2011 Materials Handling & Logistics VNA articulated truck launched at CeMAT
Flexi Narrow Aisle took the opportunity to launch its new Flexi VNA lift truck at the recent CeMAT exhibition. The four- wheel, electric-powered Flexi VNA is designed to offer faster, safer work cycles with optimum stability in aisles as narrow 1,600mm wide.
The new model, which can lift pallets to heights of up to 7.9 metres, is supplied as standard with treaded cushion rubber tyres for maximum traction in wet out- door conditions, while twin front
wheel drive means that the weight of the truck and the load is evenly divided between the front two tyres to further enhance trac- tion and minimise tyre wear. At the heart of the truck is a compact axle design which, com- bined with the Flexi VNA’s abil- ity to truly articulate through 220 degrees, allows easy stacking in 1,600m aisles.
Instead of ‘pivot’ steering the Flexi VNA’s ‘true articulation’ turning system means that the Flexi VNA trucks require mini- mal manoeuvring in the aisle- ways. This, in turn, results in faster pallet put-away and pick- ing. In a 1,600mm wide aisle the Flexi VNA needs only one articu- lation to put-away a standard ISO (or Chep-style) pallet. A step change in forklift design Jungheinrich has announced what it
believes to be one of the most significant developments in forklift truck technology for many years. Following successful tri- als Jungheinrich’s new lithium ion-pow- ered pallet truck – the EJE 112i - is now in production and available to order. Lithium-Ion technology is said to offer a number of environmental and produc- tivity benefits over traditional lead acid batteries. The battery unit itself, for example, is radically different from a lead acid battery. The battery used to power the EJE 112i weighs just 14kg. It looks very much like a brief case and can be handled easily without lifting gear. Charging takes just 30 minutes to deliver a 50 per cent charge and the battery is fully charged within 80 min- utes. The short charging times enable more flexible truck utilisation and ‘opportunity charging’ – something that will be particularly welcome at sites running multiple shifts. The EJE 112i was among several new
products unveiled by Jungheinrich at the recent CeMAT exhibition in Hannover. Jungheinrich UK T: 01908 363100
