Products & applications Production equipment Two new DC welding machines

Two new 230V, single phase, DC (Direct Current) MIG welding machines, the MIG130T and MIG160T, are available from Weldability-SIF, the UK based supplier of MIG.

Both machines are designed for fast, easy operation with four adjustable weld settings and are supplied with an integrated

MIG torch and 2.5m hose, power cable fitted with 3-pin, 13A plug as well as an earth clamp. They can be used to weld mild steel using 0.6mm and 0.8mm diameter standard MIG wire or 0.8mm diameter flux cored wire (without gas) on 5kg spools. The output current and the wire feed speeds are controlled using a potentiometer knob on the front panel, while heat settings are adjusted using combination switches. Both include 0.6mm – 0.8mm wire feed rolls and fea- ture reversible polarity for use with and without gas. Weldability-SIF T: 01462 482200 www.weldability-sif.com Enter 307

The right tools

for productivity As part of a major expansion of its machining operations CastAlum, the aluminium castings supplier has adopt- ed tooling supplied by Mapal to achieve its objectives of combining short cycle times with consistent quality. CastAlum decided in 2009 to invest in new machining centres to meet fast growing demand from customers. The company decided machining centres from Heller partnered with cutting tools from Mapal would be most suitable. In developing the tooling for CastAlum, Mapal faced challenges that included tight tolerances and difficult machining operations in deep bores. The company addressed these chal- lenges with custom-designed tools, samples of which were delivered to CastAlum within six weeks of the order being placed. The sample tools proved satisfactory but, for the gearbox hous- ings, there were last minute changes to the customer’s specification. “Mapal responded by designing and supplying a new tool in less than two weeks,” says CastAlum programme manager Chris Dodds.

Mapal also installed a system that includes secure but readily accessible storage for the tools, using RFID tags to provide tool identification. Mapal

iPads used to improve efficiency

Racine Federated (RFI) has introduced the EMAP (Electronic Management of Assembly Process) program as the next element in the corporate efficiency plan. The new EMAP system includes the deployment of several Apple iPads to the flow meter production line; including assembly, testing and shipping opera- tions. EMAP eliminates virtually all paperwork, moving RFI further in the direction of a paperless and sustainable operation.

EMAP operates with each person obtaining an iPad from a charging station and logging in. The system will then instruct personnel on the type, quantity and priority of flow meters to build for

that day. When assembly is complete, product is moved to testing/calibration and on to shipping. Each department fol- lows a similar process using the individ- ual’s iPad. Included in EMAP process software are pick-lists, inventory loca- tions and individual work instructions. Racine Federated www.racinefed.com

Lubricant cuts costs and aids energy efficiency ExxonMobil Lubricants and

Petroleum Specialties, a division of Exxon Mobil Corporation, has announced its new high-perfor- mance, fully-synthetic industrial gear oils, Mobil SHC Gear series. The Mobil SHC Gear series has been formulated to help general manufacturing and processing industries increase productivity and reduce costs by lowering energy consumption and extend- ing oil drain intervals.

The new Mobil SHC lubricants are said to offer valuable energy efficiency benefits across a range of industrial gearbox applica- tions. In statistically validated laboratory tests and field trials,

‘Superman’ of machine technology

In the race to make higher quality metal parts more efficiently, GE Global Research has developed what it calls the ‘Superman’ of machining technologies. The technology, Blue Arc, can cut through tough engineering alloys used in aircraft engines and power generation turbines in a fraction of time it takes using conventional milling processes. The main benefits of BlueArc are said to be reductions in machining cycle time; lower tool- ing costs and the enabling of lean manufacturing concepts. The technology is said to remove hours, even days, from manufac- turing processes such as building a jet engine or a 400+ megawatt power generaion turbine. Blue Arc technology is being used by GE’s Aviation business for the manufacture of blisks

Mobil SHC Gear fluids are said to have exhibited energy savings of up to 3.6 per cent compared with conventional oils. In addition its high oxidation resistance enables extended oil life up to six times

compared to standard mineral gear and bearing lubricants, espe- cially at elevated temperatures. Backed by research and testing, Mobil SHC Gear oils are said to demonstrate excellent water-han- dling properties, enhanced resis- tance to micropitting fatigue, improved seal compatibility and outstanding shear stability. Mobil SHC Gear fluids are approved by Siemens for use in Flender gearboxes and are said to meet or exceed most other indus- try and OEM specification for industrial gearbox applications. pillars catalogue Huco Dynatork is said to stock one of the largest metric ranges of round and hexagonal spacers, standard and Klip- Loc pillars, stand-offs and connector screw locks. They are available in a wide choice of thread sizes, lengths and materials. The entire selection, many of which

are stocked for next day delivery, is detailed in a new eight-page catalogue. The publication also provides full dimension and performance data on all options and also confirms Huco Dynatork’s ability to source and manu- facture non-standard products in a range of materials.

The A4 catalogue, entitled ‘Spacers,

Pillars and Stand-Offs’ is available from the Huco Dynatork sales office.
