HOW IT’S DONE

BEHIND THE BOARD WITH… T. JAY

Producer and songwriter for Domino Records, T. Jay, AKA Tim Goodacre talks to Audio Pro...

THE SWORD – WARP RIDERS

Off the back of two amazing albums, a world tour with Metallica and general heavy metal stardom, The Sword has released their latest album, Warp Riders. Produced by renowned engineer, Matt Bayles (Botch, Mastadon, Isis), Warp Riders has a fuller and cleaner sound than its predecessors. Riders is the first album not produced by the band, which shows in the production as the overdriven guitar sound of past albums takes a back seat to allow tighter, punchier rhythm sounds to fill in the gaps distortion use to hold. The guitars were captured by a combination of Shure 57s, Royer 121s, 421s, all through Neve and Telefunken V76 pre amps. The vocals on Warp Riders are also significantly more produced and prominent on this record. This is due mainly to Bayle’s use of Neumann’s U67 and M49 mics with a Telefunken V76 mic pre, GML 8200 Dual Channel 5-band parametric equalizer and D.W.Fearn VT-7 stereo tube compressor. “ I think there’s a more diverse set of influences coming through in the song writing. Don’t fear: It’s still The Sword, just with a few extra twists. J.D. has gotten more confident as a singer and I think it shows,” Bayle says. Tracking for the album was done at Austin, Texas’ Wire Recording on a vintage API 32x12x32 console with Uptown moving fader automation. Mixing was done at Electro Kitty in Seattle, Washington on an SSL 9056 SSL via Lavry converters back into Pro Tools.

Which band/project are you currently working on? I have a song in production with Travie McCoy from Gym Class Heroes, for which I’ve just sent over the final vocals. I’m writing and producing for soul and pop singer Lexie Stobie and I also have some artists of my own in development, which is exciting.

Where are you at the moment? In Universal Studios London, comping vocals.

Are you using an audio console? How many channels? Yes, a Tascam DM3200, which has 32 inputs, and with 16 returns you get 48 channels at mixdown. However, I’ve been mixing in the box more often over the last few years.

Favourite monitors? NS10MS all the way, because I know them. Adam A7’s have a really great bottom end though.

Favourite studio? Sony Studios in Sydney, Australia, has a fantastic SSL and the vintage outboard is second to none. The live room is okay but you have to work it harder to get the sound you’re after, so it’s a tie between this and Cosmos studios, Stockholm, which has an incredible vibe, plus an SSL 4000E.

What’s been your worst professional experience? Having a newly signed artist freak out in the vocal booth, slam doors and leave like she was Mariah. Was kind of funny though in retrospect.

and singing along to my first number one single sang live at the Sydney Opera house in Australia. It rocked.

What really pisses you off when working? People over my shoulder. Sometimes you have to get it wrong ten times before you get it right. It’s a process that’s very internal, and when I’m laying parts down, I just need my own space to get what’s in my head out on tape, so to speak.

What makes you happy when working?

Hearing a really talented artist breathe life into a song; there are many artists that simply sing the words, but now and again, someone comes along that connects to the lyrics the way you did when you wrote it.

Finally, if you weren't working now, you'd be?

What’s been your highlight? For the venue and excitement alone it would have to be seeing 6,000 people go crazy jumping

Spending time with my fantastic wife and my four wonderful kids. It’s important in this job to not get your head stuck up your ‘mono output’. It’s a short life. myspace.com/tjaysmusic
