> STUDIO MICS LIVE SOUND >> IMG STAGE LINE monacor.co.uk

IMG’s ECM-170 is a large diaphragm condenser mic that utilises a gold-plated, one-inch diaphragm and is ideal for use on a wide variety of instruments, or for recording vocals. The directivity of the microphone can be switched between cardioid, figure-of-eight and omni-directional pickup patterns. It also features a switchable low cut filter and a 10dB attenuator switch. The microphone is supplied with a case, a vibration-dampening support (spider), and a windshield.

IMG also offers a portable absorber and diffuser for use with this or other studio mics. The WSW-200 reduces the transmission of unwanted room influences such as reflections, particularly in rooms that are not ideal in terms of their acoustics.

JTS

PERHAPS better known for its wireless mic systems, JTS nevertheless produces some excellent studio mics that show just what can be had in the same price range as a decent dynamic mic. Central to the range is the JS-1 with its super-thin, contoured, one-inch, 24K gold-plated diaphragm, which provides transparent reproduction of high SPL signals across the frequency range. A switchable 10dB pad is built- in to increase the SPL capabilities. A multi-pattern version of the JS-1,

the JS-1T is also available, providing three selectable polar patterns: cardioid, omnidirectional and figure- of-eight. It is the JS-1 tube, however, that is the jewel in the crown, with nine

switchable polar patterns and the tube

warmth to liven up any acoustic track.

RECENTLY, Neumann’s TLM 103 has become something of a standard for ‘bread and butter’ recording by offering the famous Neumann sound at a price that’s within the reach of the average professional. The mic’s capsule is derived from that used in the famous U 87, with a cardioid pattern that is acoustically balanced and provides high attenuation of signals from the rear. The capsule has a flat frequency response up to about 5 kHz, and above that, a wide flat 4dB presence boost. The letters TLM stand for transformerless microphone. With TLM technology the usual output transformer is replaced by an electronic circuit. As with traditional transformers, it ensures good common mode rejection and prevents RF interference that may influence the balanced audio signal.

DPA MICROPHONES dpamicrophones.com

DPA launched its new Reference Standard series of microphones at Prolight + Sound last month. The new line takes DPA’s Standard and Compact ranges, such as the 4000 and 2000, a step further, with improvements in sound quality. For example, cardioid and wide cardioid capsules can now handle 139dB (A) before reaching one per cent THD.

AKG akg.com

THE NEW flagship of AKG’s Perception range, the 820 Tube features a dual one-inch large diaphragm capsule and the sophisticated ECC 83 dual- triode circuitry. A remote control unit allows selection of nine different pickup patterns and controls the switchable bass-cut filter and the attenuation pad. A ground lift switch prevents unwanted hum if necessary. The studio mic for which AKG is probably best known though is the 40-

year-old C 414. AKG now offers two upgraded versions, the C 414 XLS and C 414 XLII, both offering nine pickup patterns, peak hold LEDs, three switchable bass cut filters and three pre-attenuation levels.
