Sportphysical activity &
May 2011 »7
It has taken years to come to fruition, but the day has fi nally arrived when the sport and physical activity sector is represented by one
single institute and speaks with one single voice. Here are comments
from some of the key players involved in
running sport in the UK.
THE
INDUSTRY SPEAKS
‘I am frankly delighted that ISPAL and ISRM are coming together to target their efforts more effectively across sports management. The way they achieve a united approach could be a lesson for others following the same process.’
Hugh Robertson, Sports Minister and Minister for the Olympics
‘The merger of the two organisations into one new Institute is a major step forward for all of us who work throughout the sport and physical activity sector. In this unprecedented time of change, the new Institute will play a vital role in delivering our professionals of the future. This gives us a real opportunity to make a difference, raise standards and infl uence policy at the highest levels. I am looking forward to ensuring we give every opportunity to all our staff to engage with the new Institute and prepare the future leaders of our sector.’ Craig McAteer, chair of sporta
‘Having been a member of both Institutes for many years I welcome the merger. The value of having a single, focused, professional body championing the sector, particularly at this time of major change, is huge. It is imperative that, as a
sector, we infl uence decision- making relating to sport and physical activity at the highest levels. The voice of one strong, integrated and progressive institute is more likely to be heard than a collection of smaller organisations.’ Ewan Jackson, chief executive offi cer, Borders Sport and Leisure
‘For our industry to be taken seriously we need to have one harmonious voice. We have an incredibly strong message to get across, and in the past, personalities and conflicts have got in
the way of doing this. I hope that the new institute is run in an open way for the benefit of the whole sector, while lobbying government during this period
of immense challenge.’ Mike Hill, managing director, Leisure-net Solutions
had different ideas. Now with one body,
‘I see this as a massive step forward. Quest in the past had to deal with two separate bodies, which often
we can work together as partners to ensure that Quest is fully aligned to industry thinking. We will be working with the new Institute to develop training programmes and specifi c modules, which we believe will help staff working in the leisure
industry to progress their careers and improve their knowledge. As someone who has worked in the leisure industry for more than 20 years, I am embarrassed to say that I only joined ISPAL in 2010, as one of its ambassadors. I had never been convinced that the institutes offered me any real value for money. However, I now fi rmly believe that it will be worth my while being a member.’
Caroline Constantine, director of Quest
