Value added in the gym Shaking up the fi tness world

In a gym I visit there is a machine in the corner that all but one or two members scurry past without looking at. There is almost a fearful expression on their faces, as if the machinery is going to jump out and harm them, writes Sarah Juggins. The vibration-training machine is gradually making its mark on the UK fi tness sector, but only

slowly.

The instructors at the gym are frustrated, and understandably so. They have all received training on the correct use of the machines and realise the advantages of incorporating vibration training into a fi tness regime. Evidence of its benefi ts are well documented and, once inducted, the equipment is easy to use. VibroGym is a supplier of vibration training equipment across the world. A visit to its website will show the numerous academic and medical endorsements for the use of vibration training machines. While elite

Gradual lift-off... vibration training has been slow to gain popularity, but it offers plenty of benefi ts

equipment to add height to jumps, strength to muscle fi bres and fl exibility to muscle groups, so the elderly, the injured and the immobile can also use the equipment to improve health and fi tness. Personal trainer Dan Fivey describes the

vibration machines as a ‘one-stop shop’ for fi tness. ‘Unlike bikes or treadmills, you can perform hundreds of different exercises on these machines,’ he said. ‘And as an accessory in the gym, such a wide range of people can use the equipment. You can

treat bone density, multiple sclerosis and fi bromyalgia sufferers, athletes, anterior cruciate ligament injuries, diabetics – all on the same machine ‘Therefore you can

expand your member base by focusing on each group and its needs.’
