The IMSPA education and training team provide a round-up of the courses offered to members of the Institute to enable a smooth pathway along the career ladder
IMSPA has developed a portfolio of qualifications, which offer industry-focused training in
management and leadership for the sport, leisure and physical activity sector.
NATIONAL POOL PLANT FOUNDATION CERTIFICATE (NPPFC)
This is a one-day introductory Level 2 course designed for frontline staff, such as lifeguards, fitness instructors, caretakers and individuals who have little or no experience, or are new to the industry. It also covers basic swimming pool water issues. The key areas that the course addresses are water quality, water testing, water treatment and pool hygiene. candidates are also taught the practical skills required to test pool water. This course is an ideal step towards gaining the full Pool Plant operators certificate.
NATIONAL POOL PLANT OPERATORS CERTIFICATE (NPPO)
The nPPo is a Level 3, three-day course designed for supervisors, managers and anyone with relevant industry experience, who is responsible for the safe operation of swimming pools. The course is ideal for staff wishing to
progress within the industry, it also provides core knowledge, including pool water testing,
the chemistry and treatment of pool water, and current best practices. It also aims to enable employees to demonstrate an understanding of the design and operation of their own pool plant, including the circulation, filtration, disinfection, ph correction and heating of pool water. Successful candidates will know how to
maintain water that is in ‘balance’ and is safe and pleasant to swim in. They will be able to understand the remedial action required to restore ideal conditions, the technical requirements for ensuring safe and efficient operation of the pool plant room, and the use of good management and cost-effective technologies to save energy.
RegisteR of Pool Plant PRofessionals (RoPPPs) UPdate seminaR
This one-day course aims to provide qualified holders of the NPPO Certificate with the necessary technical updates on pool plant, water treatment and health and safety practices, to bring their knowledge back up to date and qualify them to remain on the RoPPPs register. Candidates who attend the RoPPPs update seminar will retain their place on the register for a further three years. By doing so, they will be recognised by employers and the industry for maintaining and developing their technical knowledge of pool plant and water treatment.
NATIONAL SPA POOL OPERATORS CERTIFICATE (NSPO)
Staff on this one-day course are expected to already have a basic knowledge and understanding of spa pools. It offers them the chance to gain a nationally-recognised qualification. The course provides a
detailed understanding of the design and operation of spa pools, and of how to manage the particular hazards they
present. The course examines the contamination of spa pool water, and the treatment processes for that water through each of the component parts of the spa. It investigates the water testing protocols and the interpretation of results with an overview of the health and safety implications and the need to operate within specified guidelines.
