SUNNYSIDE STILL GOING STRONG

THE FRESNO MAINSTAY CELEBRATES ITS CENTENNIAL THIS JUNE

I BY KEN ROBISON

n 1911, William Howard Taft was America’s president, Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics won the World Series, and 19-year-old Johnny McDermott became the fi rst American to claim golf’s United States Open. That was also the year Sunnyside Country Club, Fresno’s fi rst golf course, opened on what

had been a mostly treeless vineyard in Fresno County. A century later Sunnyside remains a bastion of San Joaquin Valley golf on 135 acres in

southeast Fresno. It has evolved from nine to 18 holes, from sand greens to grass greens, and through decades of changing golf demographics and technology—as well as the growth of hundreds of eucalypti, pines, redwoods and junipers—into a sparkling 6,950-yard layout that continues to challenge local, regional and state golfers of all ages.
