PINEHURST NO. 2 REOPENS

L

egendary Pinehurst No. 2 reopened last month after a yearlong restoration

project returned the natural strategic char- acter to the original Donald Ross design. Relying on historic photos from the 1940s, the design team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw eliminated grass outside of the fairway, reducing total irrigation by 30 percent. More than 25 acres of rough reverted to natural areas of hardpan, sand, pine straw and wiregrass that were defin- ing characteristics of the original topogra- phy. The bunkers dotting the course also returned to a more natural look replacing the formerly rigid defining lines. Fairways were widened by almost

50 percent allowing for more strategic options to attack the famous crowned greens that were re-sodded with bent grass. More tee shots may find the pine straw because of fast and firm fairway conditions that are designed to penalize stray shots and reward the accurate driver with additional distance.

The course has served as the site for

more major championships than any other in the U.S. and will host the 2014 U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open Championships in back-to-back weeks.

For the year, 46 courses opened nationwide according to the National Golf Foundation. 32 / NCGA.ORG / SPRING 2011
