PENALTY STROKES FOR EXTRA CLUBS

Q: Rick asks: In four-ball competition Player B of team A-B discovers he has an extra club just before he tees off on the second hole. However, his partner has already started the hole. Is team A-B penalized two strokes each or four strokes each? A: The team would add two penalty strokes to the fi rst and second holes, four strokes total. If you look at the defi nition of partner it says that where the context so admits, the word “player” includes his partner. The violation of 4-4 by either player applies to his partner

(Rules 30-3d and 31-6). The side has considered starting play of the next hole as soon as the player has played a stroke on that hole.

SAND AND SOIL ON THE GREEN

Q: Lucille asks: If you are on the fringe of the green and you want to putt to the hole, but there is sand and dirt on the fringe between you and the hole, can you brush away the sand and dirt? A: Sand and loose soil are loose impediments on the green only. See defi nition of loose

impediments. Rule 13-2 states that a player may not remove or press down sand or loose soil. Violation for this action is two strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play.

RIGHTS AS A COMPETITOR

Q: Gary asks: Player A is on the green and Player B is off the green. Before Player B makes a stroke, he requests that Player A mark his ball but Player A refuses nor does he play fi rst. Player B makes his stroke and hits Player A’s ball. What is the ruling in stroke play and match play? A: Player B is disqualifi ed in stroke play for refusing to comply with a rule affecting the rights of another competitor (Rule 3-4). It is a loss-of-hole penalty in match play (Decision 2/3).

VIOLATION FOR ASKING HOW A PUTT BREAKS

Q: Dave asks: Is asking or receiving information about how a putt may break while on the green a violation and subject to a penalty? I think it is allowed (similar to distance) but my playing partner argued that it is a penalty (similar to asking what club you hit). A: Asking how a putt breaks (other than from your partner or caddie) is a violation of Rule 8-1b. Ad- vice is any counsel or suggestion that could infl uence a player in determining his play. Penalty for breach of this rule is loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play.
