Investing for the Future

By Kerry Gordon, NCGA President The NCGA is pressing

onward in an uncertain economy with an eye toward continuous improvement in all areas associated within its sphere of influence. While the economy and its impact on the game present challenges, we have focused on getting better and are improving our products and services for the benefit of members and the growth of the game. I will briefly address

specific areas of focus: membership growth, adding value for members, junior golf, technology and col- laborative behavior. Membership growth. In 2010 membership de- clined approximately 4.5%, the largest decline in mem- bership in recent history. While we remain one of the largest associations in the world with 160,000 mem- bers we are actively promot- ing membership through

traditional and contempo- rary marketing channels. Adding value for

members. We continue to invest in member benefits such as sponsoring more than 400 tournament days, free golf clinics, discounts, member outings and eClub- house to name a few, and

tion at Poppy Hills will have a tremendous impact on our brand. Junior golf. The NCGA

Foundation continues its growth and invests in the future of the game by de- velopmental programs for youth. Youth

on Course and the Junior Tour continue to expand and provide opportunities to those with otherwise lim- ited access to the game and competitive events which are so important in teaching life skills and values. Technology. While tech-

are working to improve the experience at both of our golf courses. Renovations and pricing strategies have greatly improved Poppy Ridge, and the recently announced planned renova-

nology is not the “answer” it certainly is the “enhancer.” Our investments in technol- ogy have positively impact- ed almost every aspect of the game from the equip- ment we use to live tourna- ment scoring. The days of paper registration and snail

mail are quickly going the way of metal spikes. Collaboration. Alone

the NCGA can do much; however, investing time to link to organizations such as the NCPGA, USGA, WGANC, CAG, PWGA and others we become a powerful force, working together for common-sense solutions to issues such as water, the environment, government intervention and taxation. How do we accomplish

all of this? It takes an out- standing team of individu- als working for our mutual benefit on a full-time basis, and that is our NCGA staff. However, without the invest- ment by so many talented vol- unteers who give unselfishly of their time and resources it would not happen. Through continuous investment of time, talent, resources and dedication this organization has prospered since 1901, and with the historical shared vision of investing for the future we will continue to grow and improve. Together we can all

achieve more and it is truly a joy to be a part of the journey. Join me and so many others who have made the NCGA the outstanding organization it is today. If you have an interest in becoming a volunteer we have many areas where contributions have yet to be made.
