A Look Back 1981


• The Association


erroneously celebrates its 75th anniversary. It is later discovered that the actual founding year of the NCGA is 1901, making it the


80th anniversary. •


The rules and competitions department is involved with 171 tournament days a year (now exceeding 400). •


A contest to name the new NCGA golf course, to open five years hence, is an- nounced. The winner receives a weekend for two at the Lodge at Pebble Beach.


1991 •


Poppy Hills hosts its first AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and its course record is set at 66 by John Cook and Larry Mize. The course gears up to host the NCAA


Men’s National Championship in June. Spyglass Hill celebrates 25 years. Looking back, its original proposed name, Pebble Pines, conjures none of the intimidation the final name will inflict. Paul Porter assumes the reigns at Poppy Hills, leaving behind his position as direc- tor of operations at Northstar at Tahoe. Porter will go on to become NCGA CEO in 2004.
