Applied technology Electrical & electronic Automation is a sweet success for a sugar mill in Ecuador


EG automation and control equipment is enabling the Ingenio Valdez sugar mill in Ecuador to operate with a completely automated extraction process. In addition to increasing the processing capacity, the equipment will help the mill to reduce its energy costs and cut manual plant input.

The new system will practi- cally double production at the sugar mill, simplifying and improving efficiency with a single control room interfacing via distributed networks to perform digital processes and collect data within the facility.


MCC panels (motor control centres) are being installed to con- trol the Uni-Systems technology diffuser which replaces the tradi- tional crusher. With the support of WEG’s automation solution the diffuser will be able to process up to 14,000 tons/day of sugar as opposed to the 9,000 tons processed by the now deactivated three-roll crushers.


According to WEG specialist in sugar and ethanol processes, Marcos Mesquita, this automation solution represents the opening up of a new market for WEG, entirely focused on companies which specialise in the exclusive production of sugar.


He said: “The control of the diffuser provided by a WEG Automação solution is closely


connected to the quality of the juice extracted from the sugarcane and the efficiency of the cane preparation developed under strict control standards.” Edgar Sandoval, industrial director of Ingenio Valdez, added: “This project will allow a better command of all the variables of the electrical processes of extrac- tion. Enter 203 Controllers meet electric motorcycle demands


evcon is supplying motor control technology for Brammo’s ground-breaking Enertia Plus street bike which recently completed European homologation testing. The Gen 4 size 2 motor controllers, which combine a compact size with high power capacity, have been chosen to meet the specific performance capabilities of the electric motorcycle which has a range of 80 miles and a maximum speed of 60mph. The motor controllers will be used to control a high output sealed brushless PMAC motor on the Enertia with a peak power of 13KW at 4,500 rpm, a current of 80A and torque of 40Nm. The Gen4 range is designed to control either AC asynchronous motors or PMAC synchronous motors. The controller is closely matched with the PMAC motor to contribute to smooth power transmission, improved efficiency and extended range.

The Gen 4 size 2 being used on the Enertia Plus incorporates the latest in electronic motor control technology and enclosure assembly to provide the smallest controllers relative to power delivery.
