ACCORDING TO Steve Gallon, MD of Fibox, the customisation of enclosures is a growing issue. To meet customer require- ments, the company generally uses housings from the standard range to minimise costs, but under certain criteria will design and manufacture a bespoke enclosure to exact specification. As a result of its enclosures, the company is helping manufacturing industries to provide everything from micro electronics to much larger control and instrumentation solutions

in the most arduous and hostile of environments, with the enclosures withstanding environ- mental conditions. Now, however, the company

has introduced new software which enables its customers to download CAD drawings and design in-house a fully customised enclosure solution. Fibox can then, in a matter of minutes, provide a fully itemised quotation and arrange prototypes.

Following on from a few years of rather depressing news regarding the UK economy and the state of certain markets, we finally have some good news. According to a poll by the AMA Association for Sensor Technology, a record year can be expected in the sensor and measuring industry. For the poll, 460 members were canvassed, and the result showed a predominantly positive mood in this industry. Particularly notable, it states, were the sales trend and readiness to invest. The AMA states that the industry arrived at its trough in the middle of 2009, but

was able to attain a continuous increase in sales of 31%; and before the turn of the 2010/2011 year, the industry had exceeded the pre-crisis level. It added that approximately 90% are counting on further sales increase in the current year. Projected to the sensor industry as a whole, this would result in an additional 13% increase in turnover. This means that, looking forward, not only will there be interesting develop- ments in both new products and technologies, but the applications in which these sensor and measurement products will be used in will grow too. It could, therefore, be the start of a very interesting time. Rachael Morling – Editor

BMW’s customers’ values at the centre of the innovation process. By leveraging V6 to create a single IP reference, the company will link customer requirements to implementable functions in the car, while defining the logi- cal architecture of the systems and releasing the physical expression in form of hardware and software.
