o matter what type of gear you are looking for, for any kind of application, the solution is out there somewhere. In fact there have been a number of new gear solutions introduced to the UK market in recent months.


Ondrives, for example, has added skive cut gears to its range, as well as Delrin POM (white) and Peek Gf30 (light brown) precision spur gears. The skive hobbed gears are produced in a different way to standard cut gears by being gearcut, hardened, then skived, to produce a high quality gear tooth finish. These are produced in-house by Ondrives and are available in 0.5 0.8, 1.0 and 1.25 Mod, with teeth from 18 to 250. Optional extras include features such as different bores, keyways, tapped holes and pin holes.


As for the precision spur gears, the unusual materials from which they are made are already proving popular. Peek Gf30 offers chemical resistance, and high tensile and impact strength; while Delrin plastic has good fatigue life, low moisture sensitivity, high resistance to solvents and chemicals, and good electrical properties. These gears are from 0.5 to 3.0 Mod as standard, with teeth from 18 to 250. Options are available as before, and complete specials can be produced if required,


For such applications as those in the packaging industry and in automation, Wittenstein has introduced the LPBK+, the right-angle equivalent to the In-Line LPB+ gearhead.

Drivesystems offers a range of industrial gear units


This, explains the company, is suited to belt drives and linear sys- tems, and is an economical bevel gearhead with a space saving design. The LPBK+ has a torque capacity of up to 220Nm nominal torque and a maximum input speed of up to 4,500rpm. It is available in sizes 070, 090 and 120 with ratio's from 3:1 to 10:1, and as a flange version or with pre-assembled timing belt pulley. NORD Drivesystems offers high- performance industrial power transmis- sion solutions for elevated torque and power ratings, and its large-scale gear units are used extensively in such areas as chain or belt conveyors, freight lifts, agitators and many other applications. In some applications its industrial gear units can replace or complement the large-scale gear units, Nord claims. For example, the company offers industrial gears rated 90,000 Nm and above in the proven UNICASE housing. This design ensures maximum resistance against radial and axial loads, since all bear- ing seats are integrated into a single-piece gearcase. Users can select from a wide range of modu- lar gear units and com- ponents, and easily adapt the configuration to specific appli- cation requirements for a maximum output of up to one megawatt. Schaeffler, meanwhile, has devel- oped a slim design of spur gear differen- tial for passenger cars, which is said to be 30% lighter than its predecessors


and will create up to 70% free axial space in the gearbox. This translates to up to a 3kg mass reduction for each differential and up to 90mm of extra space in the gearbox.


The slim shape is also said to enable the use of new bearing concepts with optimised friction characteristics, which will have a positive effect on fuel


economy and CO2 emissions. According to the company, in the 1950s a mid-sized car weighed in at around 900kg, which has now increased to around 1,600kg due to safety and comfort as well as electronic aids. Every kilogramme that can be saved from the overall weight of a vehicle is therefore critical, putting increasing pressure on vehicle manufac- turers and their suppliers to minimise the size and weight of powertrain systems and engine components.

Maintaining the safety of theme park rides

To meet requirements, Brevini is able to service gearboxes using OE parts to rejuvenate them to their original specification, or can engineer solutions to replace gearboxes with new products that fit within the original drive’s footprint and improve performance and efficiency. The company recently worked with Blackpool

Pleasure Beach and Cleethorpes’ Pleasure Island. For both, a service engineer visited the site to inspect each gearbox individually to then ascertain which drives would benefit from maintenance and which would be more cost effective to replace. Dave Brown, Brevini sales manager, said: “We are able to identify whether a drive needs to be repaired or

replaced depending on its use and the conditions it is subjected to. Our service engineers are able to identify components that require service or, where necessary, design a whole new drive solution tailored to the parameters of the application.”


If a drive needs to be replaced, in most cases it is possible to engineer a solution that will be more durable and have greater efficiency, whilst fitting within the original drive’s footprint – meaning no further re-engineering is required, claims the company. Products available from the company include compact and efficient planetary gears, plus larger heavy duty helical and bevel-helical units. It is also possible to combine the two to create hybrid designs that offer the benefits of both.
