GUITAR ASSAULT
STILL LIFE Two of the main problems of still photography are perspective and motion... You can just never tell exactly what is going on sometimes. Take this shot, for example, snapped at the NAMM Show in Anaheim. We’re pretty certain that the
curious looking retailer is not about to insert the guitar into Trev Wilkinson’s face... But has he extracted it from there in an effort to get a closer look at the auto-tune system? We all know that Trev’s head is full of guitars... A third problem of photography is ineptitude, thus Andy Barrett’s alarming pic of Dennis Drumm’s outrageous Fret King silk shirt will never, sadly, make it into print.
THE AGEING PROCESS It happens to us all (as MI Pro’s editors are constantly telling the bright young things that – annoyingly – surround them in the office), but sometimes nothing illustrates the ageing process better than the rich and (erstwhile) famous. Case in point, Cockney Rebel were regulars on Top of the Pops in the mid to late 70s and the lead singer and main songwriter, Steve Harley, caused something of stir with his glam appearance when the band hit the big
MI ICON
THE AVEDIS Zildjian Company isn’t just one of the oldest MI companies in the world, its establishment in the year of 1623 makes it one of the longest running companies in any sector of business. The original cymbals crafted by the
manufacturer back in the 17th century certainly deserve a mention in this section, as virtually every genre would simply not be remotely the same without some sort of ride, crash, splash or hi-hat involved, which all originated from Zildjian. The very first versions were crafted in 1618 by a fellow known as Avedis in Constantinople and he combined tin, copper and silver to make a sheet of metal that could produce musical sounds without shattering. Their first purpose was actually as a simple noise-maker to frighten off Ottoman enemies. In fact, it was not
until the 19th century that it was realised that cymbals had musical potential, which led to a shift in the company’s manufacturing approach. In around 1680, composers began to experiment with these cymbals and the first recorded example of this was of the German composer, Strungk’s opera entitled Esther. Throughout the 18th century,
Zildjian’s products began to feature heavily in many European military bands and Haydn decided to use cymbals in his 1794 piece Military Symphony. It was in the 1800s that Zildjian started to achieve worldwide recognition, due to its increasing inclusion within popular classical music at the time, with many big name composers refusing to use products from any other manufacturer. In 1928, Avedis III and Aram Zildjian started making cymbals in

time with The Psychomodo album (Harley at the front). Move on 35 years and unsurprisingly, Harley is not the sex god he was once was – but he is still very active and has been named as an endorser for the Stage Clix Jack digital wireless system. “The system is faultless. The response is immaculate and the build quality superb.
I've used my Stage Clix Jack for a hundred shows or more last year, at venues including
small, acoustic-set halls right up to outdoors at the Isle Of Wight and Glastonbury festivals,” said Harley as he cast off the shackles of companders, limited bandwidth, and uncertain, licence- requiring frequencies. “I had problems for many years with wireless guitar equipment. But I hate leads rolling under my feet and was determined to keep on hoping for the real thing to come along. Eventually, I was introduced to the Jack. Worries over.” The Stage Clix Jack operates in the digital wi-fi frequencies and it, along with all Stage Clix products, is distributed in the UK through MTR. MTR: 01923-234050

Massachussets and it was around then that the company started introducing multiple innovations, such as being the first to develop drum set cymbals. In today’s music, cymbals are so crucial to a band’s set up that it’s difficult to imagine a world where they were never invented.
