EVENT PREVIEW MUSIKMESSE
MUSIKMESSE, FRANKFURT MESSE, APRIL 6TH-9TH
Frankfurt on my mind B
efore next month’s gear-laden, mega-preview, which will be covering the best of British companies exhibiting at Musikmesse, as well as products of eyebrow-raising interest (take that as an elbow of reminder to send your information in as soon as possible, as well as a tempter) for MI Pro’s ‘Frankfurt Live’ issue. To maintain a successful presence, any show needs to evolve, so you can assume the older, larger shows are probably those that tweak and adjust most successfully. Musikmesse has shown phenomenal growth over the past decade – particularly when you consider that the show is one day shorter than it was a few years ago. This is a show that ‘gets it’ as far as MI and the music making world is concerned. At the forefront of that success is
Messe Frankfurt’s director, with overall responsibility for the Musikmesse and Prolight + Sound shows, Cordelia von Gymnich. Von Gymnich keeps a close eye on –
and herself involved in – any and every aspect of the MI world. This, in turn, affects the way she and her team approach the annual event. This year, it would seem, the buzz word
‘interactive’ will play a big part – and could be an ever growing aspect of making the behemoth of a show that much more accessible….
18 miPRO MARCH 2011 CORDELIA VON GYMNICH: The Musikmesse director is confident of a bumper show
How are preparations going this year? The preparations for this year’s Musikmesse are in full swing and running smoothly. We are confident that we will match last year’s results in terms of exhibition space. In this connection, we are particularly pleased that the trend towards mergers in the industry and the absence of the German piano manufacturers will probably only affect the number of exhibitors and not the size of the fair.
Germany is without doubt recovering from the recession better than any other Western nation – do you think this will be reflected in Musikmesse attendance this year? Or do you think the international attendance will be all the more determined (as seemed to be the case at NAMM this year)? Germany’s consumers purchased significantly more musical instruments in 2010 than the year before and we hope this propensity to consume will also give
As spring struggles to hold sway over a tenacious winter, our thoughts hanker all the more longingly for the (rather late) Musikmesse in April. Andy Barrett gets the nod for what to expect from the show’s director, Cordelia von Gymnich…
Musikmesse 2011 a boost. Then again, the proportion of international exhibitors and visitors taking part in Musikmesse is greater than any other show in the musical instrument sector, year in, year out. We always endeavour, of course, to attract as many international guests to Frankfurt as possible and our focus is on making the fair even more international.
High levels of internationality on the exhibitor and visitor sides are mutually dependent. In terms of visitors, we are, naturally, more Europe-oriented than other events. Musikmesse is the event of choice for visitors from East Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. The almost complete market coverage offered by Musikmesse is another advantage, which attracts visitors from the American continent. Moreover, with our two events in Shanghai, Music China and Prolight + Sound Shanghai, we are extremely well equipped to serve the world’s fastest growing markets with trade fairs.
Has the iPhone and smartphone app development been a big investment? Is this essentially just another marketing spend on top of everything else, or do you see more economic possibilities? The Musikmesse iPhone and smartphone apps have been developed in conjunction with a general Messe Frankfurt app, which
