I WOKE UP THIS MORNING
Business Developer – Allianz Musical Insurance LANCE THOMAS
Lance Thomas describes his busy life on the road and his illustrious background in the music industry
the East Midlands, North East, Yorkshire and North West regions, to demonstrate how musical instrument insurance can help benefit a retailer’s business and give their customers an added value service. I have to drive pretty far, so I

usually have my entire week planned ahead around key meetings and appointments. I try to ensure that I have answers to any potential questions, stock for promotional
items or anything else they might need. It’s interesting getting around guided by both my trusty Tomtom and car satnav (they like to argue). The retailers I deal with can vary

from a one-man operation to a large multiple, so my key focus is to make sure we are taking every opportunity to provide a first class service. Having seen clients during the day,
I drive home and make a plethora of notes and sync with head office’s mainframe to collate the info gathered and to put into action any requests from my clients. I have been performing music for
more than 30 years and have been in and out of studios since 1984. I have worked as a producer, engineer, composer and musician. I also spent time working in
Manchester with bands such as Molly Half-Head and GoldBlade and at

studios such as Suite 16 and The Cutting Rooms. I was the producer and engineer at The Laboratory, Liverpool Music House, where I worked with the likes of PJ Harvey, Hugh Cornwell, The Farm, and China Crisis. After going freelance, I worked at some great studios with artists such as Ladytron, Simian, Mark Rae Twisted Charm and Trip. One of the highlights of my career
was in 2008, when I played with China Crisis in front of 11,000 people at the Liverpool Echo Arena. Whenever I can, I like to go fly

fishing for trout. If I’m not there I’ll be working on my mid-Victorian terrace, which has already taken me three years to do, but I never shy away from a challenge. I love the autonomy and independence of my job, I know my objectives and I organise myself accordingly. It’s also great meeting the different retailers and seeing all the different areas too. Allianz provides an essential
investment for musicians, who place such importance on their instruments and career. Many musicians consider their equipment a part of them. The difficulty we sometimes face, like any industry, is that there are people who don’t consider insurance to be as important, however we work closely with a number of organisations within the industry and are collectively driving to change these attitudes.
