Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter Teams With Pro-Business Nonprofit
Te AFS Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter meet-
ing on Feb. 15 brought together local metalcasters with SCORE‐Erie, a nonprofit association that provides assis- tance to small businesses. With more than 40 volunteers from the Erie community,
SCORE works with small businesses to help them start, grow and achieve success in today’s challenging economy by creating low-cost workshops. “SCORE is a free and valuable resource that small busi- nesses in Erie can rely on for counseling and training from experienced business owners,” said Amber O’Neil, North- western Pennsylvania board member. Te chapter meeting also had three students from Penn
State Behrend, Erie, Pa., giving presentations on senior projects in honor of students’ night. Jesse Curci discussed an internal project at the school that involves locating and reducing vibration sources on a small windmill. Logan Wray is working with ComposiFlex, Erie, Pa., to test composite materials and use the results to build a database for the company. Wade Walk is working on a mechatronics automation system in Penn State Behrend’s mechatronics lab. Te system will improve the lab’s distribution center and help recruit new students to the program. Te Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter gives schol-
arships each year to qualified students from Penn State Behrend’s engineering program. In 2010, Curci and Walk received scholarships from the chapter. Te next meeting of the Northwest Pennsylvania Chap- ter will be March 15 at the Avalon Hotel in Erie, Pa.
