Sloop Tavern Yacht Club Announces Inaugural ‘Triple Sound’

The Sloop Tavern Yacht Club is

pleased to announce the inaugural “Triple Sound” sailboat race series, a contest that will be awarded based on combined cumulative scores from three of the club’s short-handed races: Race to the Straits, Down the Sound, and the STYC Jack and Jill race. Each of the three races will include

both Jack and Jill (male and female) and double-handed classes to allow all interested competitors to participate in the shorthanded series. The three races that will make up

the Triple Sound vary in both distance and direction, but all are limited to only single or doubled-handed crews:

• The Race to the Straits, May 7-8, has boats head 34 miles north through Admiralty Inlet to a halfway party in Port Townsend on Saturday night before returning to Seattle on Sunday. • Down the Sound, August 7-8, borrows this concept, but has boats head 22 miles south, down Colvos Passage to a halfway party in Gig Harbor on Saturday night before the return race on Sunday. • The Jack & Jill Race, September 11, consists of racing around fixed marks in the vicinity of Shilshole Bay. 2011-2012 America’s Cup World Series Update

The first half of the AC World Series

will consist of five nine-day regattas in 2011, finishing up with three more regattas by mid-2012. The winning host cities for the 2011-2012 AC World Series will be revealed in the coming weeks. The 2011-2012 AC World Series will

be sailed in the AC45, the forerunner to the next generation of America’s Cup boats. Focused on creating more on-the- water excitement for both the teams and the fans, the AC45 wing-sailed catamaran was designed for both speed and close racing. While capable of closing speeds of up to 30 knots, the AC45 remains nimble enough to handle the tight, tactical race courses planned by America’s Cup Race Management (ACRM). The 2012-2013 season will be sailed

in the larger and faster America’s Cup boats, the AC72, and its champion will be crowned just prior to the start of the Louis Vuitton Cup (America’s Cup Challenger Series) in July 2013.
