quite make the mark on port because of the current, tacked to starboard just before their bow hit the mark and forced the Santana 20 Hitched and the Beneteau 40.7 Bravo Zulu to point up high on the mark and over-stand even more to get around the solid West Point Buoy. The current became a fun challenge at the first mark, but soon everyone was around and deciding if they could hold their chutes or not on the tight reach across the Sound to Bainbridge. A few of the boats had to drop


their spinnakers for the last 300 yards to the mark as the wind lightened and moved forward, but many were able to hold on tight and get around without too much trouble. The no-flying-sails boats, Grayling and Whistling Swan, led the fleet around the mark and back out towards mid-channel into what became a reach to get back into the slippery water they had battled before. Once into the favorable current, boats squared their spinnakers and pointed their bows downstream towards the always elusive Spring Beach Buoy. Bravo Zulu found the little mark


on station and rounded first followed closely by Svein Ellingsen’s J-35, Bergen Viking and Graeme Esarey’s Farr 1220, Kotuku. With the wind looking light along the shore, the leaders decided to play the current channels that still headed south from the morning flood towards Meadow Point. As they approached Meadow Point and entered the adverse current experienced at the start they found a Laser race off the point that had them dodging inside along the beach or outside into the current to avoid the little buggers. With the pin favored, Bravo Zulu


crossed the line on port again, awakening the resting sea lions on the buoy and getting the ever popular line honors. A few minutes behind them came Bergen Viking and Kotuku, that had been battling it out to weather since the mark at Spring Beach. With Kotuku on their transom Bergen Viking crossed the line second and now began the steady sound of horns as the fleet of 28 boats filed into the finish. With the last boat finishing in just over four hours, this grey, wet and dreary day turned into another perfect STYC Iceberg race and it was finally cold enough to enjoy a good hot buttered rum after the finish.
