Letters

HUGE water resource, the Columbia River, flowing right through the center of the community. During our first year in Kennewick I decided I had to have a boat, but instead of a sailboat, I opted for a runabout with which we could ski. During those years I taught my kids to ski and how to handle the boat so that I too could ski. That is truly an act of faith when you yell, “Hit it!” and your child pushes the throttles forward and you pop out of the water 70 feet behind, and there is nothing you can do but hold on. It was a good time.

I got my sailing fix by crewing for a friend who had a Catalina 25 moored at the Walla Walla Yacht Club. This is definitely not a blazer and ascot kind of place, but more of a jeans and ball cap group. But the winds are strong, and so is the sailing and racing. As the kids graduated and went off to the Navy and to college, I lost my drivers and co- skiers, so we sold that boat.

I did not stay without a boat for long. I had found a Catalina 25 listed in 48° North, and checked it out. When we first talked I felt that the owner was a bit high on his asking price, so I walked away. Four months later I saw that it was still for sale and the price had come down, so I called again and we were able to make a deal. Now my boat, the True Joy 2, is also moored at the WWYC, and I am a card carrying member.

This is a long way of saying thank you for your entertaining articles. They elicit good and fond memories.

Kennewick, WA I know, this story is a bit long for Letters, but I couldn’t

resist. Anyone with kids has shared many of those experiences. One of my daughter’s favorite stories is of her and her friend playing games below while I’m standing at the helm out in the rain. Always brings a smile to her face. I’m glad we can share that “humorous” memory.
