Christmas Swan Song
With the long freezing spell of weather, we were getting calls for malnourished swans, who were landing on roads. We attended as many as we could but a call on Christmas day alerted us to a situation on the moors where a flock of swans were in trouble. This mes- sage did not come through until 4 p.m. so it was decided to do a rescue on Boxing Day.
The roads down on the moors were just sheets of ice and so it was arranged for the use of four 4 x 4 vehicles to go out to the South Drain. We also took the transporter and ambulance and 14 volunteers were prepared to come and help. Just as we got there a further 6 swans arrived. Sadly there were four swan bodies frozen in the ice and a further 8 carcasses on the side.
The Burnham on Sea Rescue Boat also attended for the safety of those attempting the rescue. The boat was placed in the small pool of water that
