Save our Badgers

You may have noticed in the last issue we stated that there was an insert of a leaflet explaining how to respond to the government consultation on culling of badgers. Unfortunately the leaflets were stuck in the snow for two weeks and missed the deadline for the posting for the newsletter.

Thank you so much to all of you who did respond to the DEFRA’s consultation and maybe also the Welsh Assembly’s consultation. We are awaiting the final decision for both to be issued in the coming weeks and sincerely hope that they realise that killing badgers is futile. It is ironic that increased cattle controls in Wales have reduced Bovine TB outbreaks in cattle by 30% in the last 12 months with the number of cattle that have been destroyed reduced by 51% against the previous years figures.

We have become part of a group called the Badger Protection League and this is an amalgamation of many organisations such as Badger Trust, League Against Cruel Sports, RSPCA, People’s Trust for Endangered Species, Care for the Wild International and IFAW putting their names together against the proposed cull. Celebrity support has been given by Sir David Attenborough, Simon King OBE, Joanna Lumley, Michaela Strachan, Mike Dilger, Chris Packham, Brian May to name just a few.

There is not much we can do at the moment other than to continue with our petition. If you think you can fill some petition forms in for us, please let us know on 01278 786282 or visit www.badgerprotectionleague.org where you can download them.

We hope to present the petition by March 25th, 2011 which is not long away - wouldn’t it be wonderful if it was all a waste of time and the government’s decided to see sense and follow the robust science.
